Chapter #31: Nothing else matters.
“What did you just say?” Lily questioned him with a shocked expression.
It was natural for a mother to be angry, considering she had been so focused on protecting her children, and then it turns out that the one she was worried the most about was secretly making the worst decisions, not even Henry, whom she expected to cause a rebellion, behaved like Harry.
As for Henry, he was looking at his brother with a shocked and bitter expression, Harry didn't know the real reason why he was acting like that, it was either because he was jealous of the attention he was receiving or because he didn’t got him involved in his business, instead, he was doing this with Tonks and some stranger people knew nothing about.
“I’m sorry, mother…Father, Henry, but after witnessing the brutality of the death eaters, I couldn’t let things keep going like that, and then, all my projects kept getting rejected, those things would cause a man to snap at some point,” Harry pointed out with a serious tone.
Tonks was hugging one of his arms, she was looking at him proudly, it was relieving to finally let the secrets out.
“And you, Tonks…You knew about it and you didn’t tell us?” Lily felt disappointed in the metamorph.
“Harry asked me to keep the secret, things weren’t supposed to blow out, we were planning to work on the shadows, but, if we had any idea you guys were fighting "you know who" we would’ve joined you, trust me,” Tonks tried to make things easier.
“No, I wouldn’t—” Harry tried to argue, but he was stopped by Tonks as her hand covered his mouth.
“Shut up…Yes, we would,” Tonks said with a fake happy tone.
“This isn’t about working together…It’s about risking your lives while we were doing our best, to protect all of you, so you weren’t in our situation!” Lily was getting angrier with each word she released.
“And what do you think is going to happen once you folks die?” Harry said bluntly, there was no sign of hesitation or pampering in his words.
He hated making his parents feel sad or disappointed, but he wasn’t little anymore, he was an adult ready to face adult challenges, and part of that is finding your own way to change the world.
Lily couldn’t help but gasp, Henry was shocked, just like Tonks, Hermione tried to look everywhere but at them, she wished she hadn’t come, she indeed wanted to visit her friend, but this visit had become quite uncomfortable.
“How you dare—” Lily tried to regain her authority.
But she was stopped by James, who put himself between his son and his wife, he was facing her with a serious expression, the one he always used every time he went out to do missions that no one knew if the ones involved would come back alive, he had no place for bullshit.
“He’s right, Lily…” James surprised Harry. “No matter how much we try to protect them…We’re not eternal, at some point we’re going to die, and then they’re going to have to take care of their lives on their own, and if we stop them and safeguard them as if they were defenseless, then that means we've failed as parents, we're just setting the up to die,” James said with a sad expression.
He hated the fact that his sons had to get involved in something like this, but there was no other way to end this conflict, they needed as many people as possible if they wanted to have a chance to defeat Voldemort and his Death Eaters.
Lily tried to argue, but no matter how many arguments she had in her head, none of them made sense because in the end, she knew James was right, she collapsed on her chair and looked at Harry.
“Fuck…I hate to say this because it rarely happens, but…Your father’s right,” Lily surprised Harry by saying that.
Lily Evans rarely admitted defeat, so, this was a surprising development.
“Mother, language!” Henry said with a fake scandalized tone.
“Hey, I’m usually right…Sometimes,” James tried to look offended, but he was more like amused.
Harry, on the other hand, couldn’t help but sigh, the truth was out in the open, they had no time to argue or fight between them, they needed to focus if they wanted to defeat that bastard.
“Father…We need to talk…About the mission Dumbledore assigned you before he faked his death,” Harry told his father, whose eyes opened wide.
“The—How?” James couldn’t believe it.
“I probably know where they are, the night I went out to kill Yaxley, not only did I steal his treasures, but I also got a map with some interesting markings,” Harry told him with a serious expression.
Everyone but James was looking at Harry with confused expressions, James couldn’t help but lightly tremble, the secret was out in the open, someone else knew about what he and Dumbledore had tried to hide.
“Father…I think it’s useless to hide this knowledge, the guy I told you works for me, he knew about them, and told me that many pureblood families have knowledge about the stuff we're dealing with, I’m not surprised you don’t because grandparents weren’t too keen to the dark arts like their peers, or at least that’s my theory why that knowledge hasn’t been passed down on the Potter family,” Harry told his father who was having a hard time breathing.
“James, are you—” Lily tried to comfort her husband, but he just closed his eyes.
“I can’t believe you got hold of that knowledge, I tried my best to avoid anyone looking into it, but it turns out that the real challenge was at home, what a sweet irony, the charm used to stop anyone but our family from accessing that information is what helped you get it,” James couldn’t stop chuckling.
“Dad, you need to call Sirius, I’m sure he knows more about it, maybe Andromeda too,” Harry said as he scratched his chin.
“Dad…What is he talking about?” Henry questioned the older wizard, who was looking at them with a sad expression.
“I’m not going to go into details, but…To make himself immortal, it seems like he divided his soul six times, seven if you count the original one in his body, he deposited those pieces in different objects scattered across the country, or at least that’s the theory Dumbledore had,” James sighed.
Many gasps were heard across the room, they were surprised and scared at the same time, to know that killing him once won’t be enough was a scary thought.
“It’s a very dark form of magic, you practically sell your humanity for fake immortality because once the objects are destroyed, you can be destroyed too, and you won’t go to heaven nor hell after that, you will only cease to exist, or at least that's what my collaborator told me,” Harry explained to them and James nodded.
“I’m calling Sirius,” James couldn’t take it anymore, he was trustworthy, that’s for sure.
“Harry…It seems like you had an interesting adventure that day you were arrested,” Tonks said before she sat beside him and kissed one of his cheeks.
He smiled softly at her, it was clear that he loved her, however, the knowledge they were going to discuss should be shared with only a few people, him, his father, and Sirius were enough, and speaking about Sirius, suddenly, he entered the room, and he was smiling brightly at him.
“Well, I’m here…What’s for dinner?” He questioned with a happy expression.
Harry couldn’t help but facepalm, maybe calling wasn't such a good idea.
