Chapter #12: New plans.
Dumbledore felt like he was losing the battle; this meeting wasn’t going as he expected, in fact, he was starting to feel like his chances to succeed were becoming very small, still, there was a possibility; he needed to do something before he lost the Potter heir.
“Harry…I want to respect your wishes, but there's a possibility that the world's fate could be resting on your shoulders as we speak. We cannot allow ourselves to lose time,” Dumbledore tried to make the young man see the reality of the situation.
“With all due respect professor, I think you’re making a mistake by thinking I’m the savior of this world, and if I were, I’m not sure I would like to take that role, I have found nothing but a backwards society since the day I arrived to this world, it’s true that there’s no magic in the muggle world but there were many ways to entertain yourself contrar to…This,” Harry stopped and pointed at the office.
It was clear that he meant the magical world with his hand gestures, and Albus didn't know how to feel about that.
“This feels dull, empty,” Harry said in a disappointed tone.
Dumbledore wanted to oppose him and tell him how wrong he was, but sadly, he knew that deep inside Harry Potter was right, this world was too outdated, however, trying to change this world could make some people believe that you’re on he verge of becoming the next dark lord.
After all, the last person who tried to change the world turned into a monster. That person was his former friend and lover, Grindelwald, he didn’t know whether Harry could or could not become like him, as he didn’t know him very well, but he didn’t look as if he were power hungry.
“Have you told the ICW about the Voldemort situation?” Asked Harry with a serious expression.
Dumbledore nodded with a sad expression.
“Yes, I raised the question before Voldemort was destroyed, and then I did it a few years ago, but my petitions weren’t taken seriously; they don't believe he can come back,” Dumbledore said sadly.
Harry remained silent for a few moments.
“You’re technically the leader, right?” Asked Harry with a raised brow.
“Yes, I am,” Dumbledore didn’t know where this was going, but if answering his questions could convince Harry to join them, then he was going to do that.
“And that means that as long as you’re in charge, they’re backing up your decisions, right?” Asked Harry again.
Dumbledore nodded, not knowing where this was going.
“Very well,” Harry got to his feet.
But surprisingly, he didn’t leave; he started wandering around the office as he caressed his chin, and then, he finally confronted Dumbledore. Harry placed his hands on the desk with a smirk on his face.
“Then you must make an unbreakable vow…I don’t want to be a tool, I want us to be equals, and I want you to hear my opinions, I want us to change the world, in exchange…I will agree to destroy Voldemort once and for all, and that in case I turn evil, the vow will kill me,” Harry extended his hand.
Dumbledore was taken aback by the proposal; someone like him shouldn’t know what an unbreakable vow was, that's almost dark magic, only shady people are used to do vows like that.
“For Merlin…We’ve failed James and Lily,” Dumbledore thought with a sad tone.
“I don’t know what you’re planning, Harry, but…You’re swimming in dangerous waters,” Dumbledore said before gulping.
“The vow prevents me from becoming a maniac, professor. I don’t know what else I need to tell you to prove that I’m not evil. It would make sense for me to be like that, considering how awful my life has been, I was robbed of my parents and my inheritance…I don’t want other Harry Potters to exist in the future, professor,” Harry sighed.
Dumbledore looked at him with a pitiful expression.
“Yes, I could destroy Voldemort, and then what? The world is still going to be the same bigoted place, and a few decades later, another dark lord or lady is going to appear, and it will become an endless cycle that we need to put a stop to it already, and we can only do that by changing the world as it is,” Harry declared with a serious tone.
Dumbledore was surprised by the speech he was hearing. Something was interesting about Harry; his words were eloquent, and he was clearly charismatic and truly believed in what he spoke about.
He didn’t want to believe that there could be a change in the wizarding world, he gave up a long time ago, on the other hand, he was tired of fighting, but if the prophecy is right then, he’ll probably won’t have to worry about Harry in the future, after all, the two of them are supposed to die at each other’s hand.
“That’s my final offer, professor…Take some time to think about it,” Harry got ready to leave, but Dumbledore stopped him.
“Wait, Harry…Okay, I accept your terms,” Dumbledore told him with a serious expression.
To say Harry was surprised would be the understatement of the century, but that didn’t stop the smirk from appearing on his face.
“Really?” Harry was having a hard time believing this was real.
“Yes…I…I believe in change, Harry, but I gave up a long time ago on this society. I try my best for the innocents, but at the end of the day, I feel like there’s nothing I can do to change society,” Dumbledore sighed. “I’m an old man, Harry, I don’t know how long I have left on this plane of existence, so, if I can use my influence to help you achieve a better world, then I'll do it,” Dumbledore extended his arm.
Harry did the same thing, and then they shared a handshake before they took their wands out, it was time to swear on their names.
“…I, Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore, swear I will help Harry James Potter to change the world, and I’ll also allow him to be my equal,” Dumbledore finished, and his hand started to glow.
“…I swear that I will do everything to destroy Voldemort once and for all and that I’m not going to turn evil,” Harry's hand started to glow too.
Then the vow was finally confirmed, and there was no holding back any longer; the magical vow was made. Dumbledore was surprised by how cunning the Hufflepuff was, but this was going to push the two of them to try their best not to lose their lives, this was going to be interesting.
“So, what’s the next step?” Asked Harry with a calm expression.
“I’m going to introduce you to the order of the phoenix, your parents, your godfather, his friend Remus, and…Pettigrew,” Harry scowled after hearing that name. “They were all part of it, so, I’m introducing you to the high-ranking members,” Dumbledore explained, and Harry nodded.
“Great because we have a big problem in hand, Albus…We have to figure out who introduced Neville Longbottom’s name in the Goblet of Fire. It’s clear that the person who did it works for Voldemort and wanted his greatest enemy gone,” Harry told the old headmaster, who nodded.
“Do you suspect someone?” Asked Dumbledore with a raised brow.
“No, but I know it was a professor, as an individual, you can only enter your name, and I seriously doubt students would give up their chance to compete just to benefit the famous boy who lived, or at least that’s my conclusion from the reaction of the students,” Harry explained.
Dumbledore nodded.
“We need to use veritaserum on them,” Harry’s words shocked Dumbledore.
Still, even if he didn't want to, they needed to do anything to catch the culprit.
