Chapter #38: A hard choice.
“So…What’s your choice, mother? Do you really want to keep living like this? Waiting for the day when the dark lord finally decides to get rid of you, or would you help us to finally get rid of him?” Questioned the blonde wizard.
His mother was standing in the room with a confused expression. Everything she knew about her son was wrong. She always saw him as frail because when he was young, he got so sick that the mediwitches and healers didn’t think he would survive.
She almost lost her mind knowing she was going to lose the only child she would carry in her life. And somehow, he managed to survive, and instead of seeing him as a strong survivor, she saw him as a frail little thing that needed to be protected, even if he was already old enough to make his own decisions.
“I think we should just erase her memory,” Sirius suggested again.
They needed to get out of here, but they couldn’t do it unless they knew their secret would not be revealed.
“No, Sirius, wait…” Harry whispered something in his godfather's and father’s ears.
They were surprised by what they were hearing, but then they saw the vision, in the plan Harry had come up with, Narcissa was an essential part; they needed to have the blonde woman on their side.
“Narcissa…I know you hate me just like you hate your sister Andromeda, but…I know that overall, you love your son and that you would do anything to protect him. Right now, he doesn’t need protection; he needs support. His father is too far gone, but you…You can still do the right thing for him,” Sirius decided to act maturely for once.
Both Harry and James were looking at him with surprised expressions. Sirius somehow managed to look like a functional adult; they were proud of him.
“But we would be helping the enemy…We’re at the top, Draco. Why aren't you happy living like this?” The blonde witch was surprised.
She never saw how unhappy her son was about this situation.
“Mom, we have the perfect lives, but people are suffering out there, people whose only crime is being born, and no person ever gets asked if they want to be born, mother, that’s something you can’t deny even with your outdated pureblood ideas,” Draco managed to have the courage to call her out.
Harry was impressed; he knew how much the blonde felt about Narcissa. His devotion towards her was impressive, so hearing him tell her the truth about how awful she was it’s refreshing, to say the least. Narcissa, on the other hand, couldn’t help but collapse on one of the sofas in the living room.
She felt tired; this was something she wasn’t expecting to deal with today, but things were more complex than they looked. Harry, on the other hand, was desperate; this woman didn’t want to see the reality until it hit her close to home, so he was going to do that.
“Narcissa…I didn’t want to say this, but your son made an unbreakable vow to me; he promised to help me destroy the dark lord, and if he doesn’t…” Harry started, and she gasped in horror.
“He dies…” She was completely shocked at the realization.
“Yes, and no, don’t look at me like that…He tried to kill me, I was in the right to do the same to him but I didn’t and I’m glad I didn’t, I truly like him now, but it’s already too late to regret the vows we made, so, until the day the dark lord is gone, the vow is still putting his life in danger,” Harry added as he grabbed one of her hands and rubbed it.
Draco felt completely ashamed of his actions. This was all his fault; he failed to kill Potter and put himself in this situation; he didn’t even want to look at his mother, it wasn’t until he heard the click of some heels and the fact that a hand grabbed his chin that he realized that she was in front of him.
“You did something very foolish, any other parent would’ve let out their child to be eaten by the wolves…But we’re not like others, we’re Malfoys, we come at the top even in the hardest situations,” Narcissa smiled sadly at him.
“Do you mean that…?” Draco wondered hopefully.
“Yes, I’m helping you with this…You’re a man and you have done something very stupid, Draco…But you’re my son, I cannot abandon you on your own, even though your father would probably suggest we do that,” the older woman sighed.
“Well, that's great news because we need your assistance with something,” Harry suddenly took the lead.
The older witch looked at him with hatred; it didn't matter if her son was the one who got in trouble by himself, she still was going to blame Harry. The dark-haired wizard could only roll his eyes at her attitude.
“Don’t look at me like that, remember that your son’s life is in danger…If we don’t succeed…” Harry snapped his fingers; they could die just as easily as he snapped his fingers.
And then she surprisingly got behind Harry with her wand ready.
“Or maybe I could kill you and get done with this…After all, the deal didn’t specify anything about him dying in case you died, and considering Draco has only reached out to me recently and not when you were being questioned, that tells me that if you die, the vow dies with you,” Narcissa said with a wicked smirk.
James, Henry, and Sirius had their wands ready to attack the blonde witch before she did something stupid, and then, they heard Harry starting to laugh, it was like he was mocking her.
“Oh…You’re way too funny. That was really good. Now, let's be honest, you can kill me if you want to, but that will mean that Draco will fail to help me succeed, there’s indeed no death clause, but this means we can play a fun game…you can use your wand on me, and the fun mystery will be the outcome: will Draco survive?" Harry couldn't help but laugh.
The older woman was shocked; she thought that she at least would make the dark-haired wizard feel some fear, and yet, he was smirking, he was enjoying all this. Draco seemed like he wanted to stop this, but at the same time, he was too embarrassed to do something.
“Go ahead and do it…I’m waiting!” Harry provoked her again.
The blonde could only grit her teeth; she wasn’t so confident about killing him anymore, and then, Harry released a frustrated sigh.
“So boring!” Harry said with a disappointed tone.
And then, he used a ring, one of his earliest inventions. He caused a shockwave to flow across Narcissa’s body; it wasn’t painful, but it was enough to disarm her and have her restricted. He was now behind her with her wand in his hand and his wand on the back of her head.
“Potter…That’s enough, she’s going to help us…Right, mother?” Draco was worried about his mother.
Potter was clearly dangerous, so it was better not to poke the bull. Harry glared at him, but in the end, he decided to let Draco’s mother go, and he even gave her wand back.
“Well, now that we’re on the same page, it’s time to talk about something related to the next item we wish to destroy…Helga Hufflepuff’s cup,” Harry said with a calm expression. “We need to access your sister Bellatrix’s vault,” the emerald-eyed wizard told the blonde woman.
Narcissa could only glare at him as Harry smirked, while the rest looked at the scene with interest.
