Chapter #17: The date.

It was time for the date; Harry was now waiting on the main door that led to the lake with a food casket and a blanket shrunk in his pocket. It had been a calm day to say the least; he got his schedule with only one subject on it: advanced defense against the dark arts with Professor Tonks right after supper every Monday.

However, right now his mind was focused on his upcoming “date.” He couldn’t help but smirk at the thought. The date was nothing but a farce, a ruse made by Hermione so she could extract information from him; however, he didn’t see a problem in toying around with the information he was going to give her.

The idea of ruining whatever Dumbledore thought of him would be hilarious, as it was stated before, Harry is a person who gets bored easily these days; he became too strong very early in his life, which is why very few things make him feel passionate these days.

Being sent to this timeline has been a blessing, a chance to live a new life. It was like he was restarting a game with a different character, but this was more interesting because it was happening in real life.

Harry’s thoughts were interrupted the moment he heard some footsteps approaching him, and soon, he smiled as he saw Hermione, who was looking a bit stressed; it seemed like even for her, the advanced classes were hard.

“Hello Hermione,” Harry said calmly.

“Hi, Harry,” she said with a weak smile.

“Is everything alright?” He asked with an arched brow.

“Yeah, it’s just… Everything I’m learning this year is so interesting and yet… I feel bad because I’m feeling like I’m not going to enjoy this year,” she sighed.

Soon, they started walking in the direction of the lake.

“Really? Why is that?” He asked with concern.

Did the Hermione from his universe go through the same thing when she came back to finish her education after the war? Harry didn’t know because they rarely saw each other, as he and Ron were training to become Aurors, and on the few occasions she was free, she spent most of those days with Ron, which was something they needed to do to keep their relationship afloat.

“Because it’s hard…” She finally admitted.

He was surprised to hear that, but he didn’t show it; after all, he and the Hermione of this universe weren’t as close as he was with the one of his own universe; however, he couldn’t help but smile.

“Well, yes, that’s the purpose of this last year of education, right? We’ve reached a point at which we can only be better, either we like it or not,” he said calmly.

“It’s easy to say that for you… I mean, you only got one subject to study!” She complained.

Then she realized that what she said implied that she was better because she was taking more subjects than he was. After that realization, she felt guilt.

“I’m sorry, Harry, I shouldn’t have snapped at you like that… I have a friend, Neville, who’s taking only Herbology, so I don’t even know why I reacted like that!” She sighed.

“Well, to be fair, I’m kind of jealous, Hermione… You have a huge range to choose what to do once we graduate, in my case, I only have… Power,” he said in a calm tone that sounded a bit creepy.

And that was intentional. It seems like Hermione quickly realized something: if Neville had talent for herbology, it meant that he was such a good person that even plants recognized his goodness, and that's why they flourished under his care. Many people underestimate how difficult it is for magical plants to grow, as they need to trust the one who tries to cultivate them.

However, if another person has only talent for defense against the dark arts, something that gives you power, something that humanity, since the start of their existence, has been trying to control. Does that mean he was power hungry? Would Harry be able to control his power? What is he going to do with the power he’ll get?

Could he become the next dark lord that no one will be able to stop? Will he seek revenge against everyone who made his school life hell? Many questions were flooding Hermione’s mind, and Harry was reading all of them as she was too distracted to even pay attention to his gaze fixed on her eyes.

“There’s not much for me, aside from maybe just joining the magical army, as being an Auror requires more than having some power, and trust me, even if I’m a bit good at defense, I’m not that strong, trust me,” he sighed.

Hermione suddenly felt at ease. Of course, someone like him wouldn’t be a threat; his grades are worse than Ron’s, and something like that is an achievement no one wants to get.

“Ouch,” he whispered to himself at her internal insult.

“What is it?” She asked more relieved.

“Oh, nothing, I think I stepped on a stone… Well, we’re here,” he told her, and indeed, they were already on the lake.

He decided not to waste time and just set the picnic blanket manually. Hermione wondered why he didn’t do it with magic, and she was wondering if he was even too weak to do that, so, if that were the case, then they were wasting time on him; he could be a good but weak person, and somehow that thought made Hermione feel good.

“Maybe we could get closer in case he’s a good person…” She thought to herself, and Harry almost spilled the food casket as he heard what she was thinking.

He didn’t know how to feel about the idea of dating Hermione, he was sure Ron liked her in this universe too, but he didn’t give a fuck about that, and now that he thought about it, Ron was the only barrier that stopped him from seeing her as a woman in his previous life, so, now that the barrier is gone, the idea of being more than friends with Hermione sounded interesting.

Hermione seemed to have forgotten her task about spying on him because soon, they started to eat the bacon sandwiches he grabbed from the kitchen, and she was instead focused on reading her advanced potions book. When she realized that they barely spoke during the date, she panicked, but it was already too late to fix that, as it was time for the next class.

“Well, let’s go,” he said as he offered his hand to help her get up.

“Where?” She asked, a bit confused.

He smiled warmly.

“To the defense class, silly!” He answered with an amused tone.

Then it quickly clicked on, of course, they were classmates, there was only one group, and it was taught by Tonks, so she took his hand, and then she felt something, like a jolt of electricity passing through her body because of the touch, but not in a bad way, it was more in a recharging way.

“Shall we get going?” He asked with his charming smile, and Hermione was on the verge of collapsing due to the embarrassment she was experiencing.

In the end she nodded, and soon, they were on their way to class, she had many conflicted feelings right now, he was supposed to be the enemy and he was ruining everything with his charming smile and attentive attitude, no guy has ever treated her like that, even if everyone thought she was dating Krum in her fourth year, it wasn’t real, she was just a replacement because his bride couldn’t attend the Yule ball.
