Chapter #51: Graveyard shift.
Harry was in trouble. The Order has decided to search for the first horcrux, the one in the Gaunt shack, and they’ve just arrived at the graveyard where, in his previous life, Voldemort came back to life; however, that’s not the reason why he’s in trouble; the reason he was in trouble was that he was dragged to this mission alongside James, Dumbledore and Sirius.
In different circumstances, this would’ve been an amazing opportunity to get to know them, but considering the three of them think he’s a potential monster and the fact that he’s sleeping with two women Sirius has been chasing with no success, it makes sense for Harry to be wary about this situation.
However, to make things worse, he has to find a way to protect himself and not die without showing his true powers. This is going to be an interesting challenge, to say the least. He was trying to remember how it felt to be under the effects of Felix Felicis; that potion made him feel like the luckiest bloke alive and that he was able to achieve anything he wanted.
Of course, considering that he fucked Daphne Greengrass and her girlfriend Tracey Davies, it was easy for him to think of himself as that. He now wished to be back at that moment instead of being here alone with these dangerous wizards, risking his life; he shouldn’t be doing something like this; Henry should be the one in his place.
“Harry… Are you okay?” Asked Dumbledore with a raised brow.
Harry looked at the old wizard and tried not to scowl knowing that Dumbledore was only showing fake concern, still, he decided not to snap at him, he knew what they were planning, they were probably trying to use him as cannon fodder, this was a good way for them to get rid of him that’s something he couldn’t deny, especially knowing that he knew what the Dumbledore of his universe went through on this place.
He needed to remain calm, if there was one thing that he remembers from the little information the Dumbledore of his universe gave him, was not to succumb to his desires, there was a jinx on the ring, a jinx that promised to give the person who grabs it what they wished the most in exchange for wearing it, but all that is false, it doesn't give you shit, it only curses you and kills you slowly.
The last thing he wants is to end like the Dumbledore of his universe; he loves his arms, so it’s better for him to keep himself calm. He looked at the three men, and they were looking at him with serious expressions; they were waiting for him to say something.
“Sorry, I was just…” Harry couldn’t help but trail off.
Then he found the tomb where the remains of Voldemort’s father were resting; the figure of the holy death with the scythe was there. He remembers that thing very well; after all, the trauma was still in his mind as if it had happened that day.
“Sorry, it’s just that… I was shocked to see that statue,” Harry said with a calm expression.
Everyone looked at the statue, and they were about to ignore its existence; however, Dumbledore suddenly took a look at the name of the person the tomb belonged to.
“Tom Riddle,” said James, shocked.
Now both he and Sirius were looking at each other with shocked expressions. Harry was already imagining what was going on through their minds; however, as far as the world knew, that was the first time he had heard that name.
“Who is that?” Harry asked with fake interest.
There was a dramatic pause, but then James answered.
“That’s the name of you-know-who… Lord Voldemort,” James told him with a serious tone.
“Actually, that’s his father,” Dumbledore corrected, amused.
They all looked at him with curious expressions, even Harry was pretending to be confused, it was hard to keep the facade when he already knew that information.
“He was named after his father? I can see why he turned up like that. I would hate to share one of my two names with my father,” Asked Harry with fake surprise.
He took a jab at James, and the older wizard groaned. Harry then smirked internally.
“It’s a long story, but the point is that his mother named him after his father and also added the middle name Marvolo; that’s the only difference between them,” Dumbledore said with a calm tone.
Now James and Sirius’ confusion was cleared.
“We’ll talk more about Voldemort's background later, but for now, there are more important matters we need to take care of—” Dumbledore was suddenly interrupted.
“Wait!” Harry was the one who did it.
Everyone looked at him with arched brows.
“Yes, Harry?” Dumbledore asked patiently.
“You told us that we came here to destroy something that could prevent him from coming back to life, right?” Asked Harry, and they nodded. “I don’t know if this makes sense, but in many muggle TV shows and books, they show villains coming back to life using the remains of their ancestors…” Harry explained.
The older wizards didn’t seem to understand what he was trying to say.
“You know what? Forget about it; it’s just muggle fiction after all. Let’s go,” Harry said, a bit disappointed; he was going to come back later to move the remains.
“Wait…” Dumbledore’s words stopped Harry in his tracks.
The old wizard was thinking about something, and then he nodded.
“I'm sorry I just remembered the story of a young man who lost his sister and then tried to bring her back to life with a ritual that required a bone of a father… Or mother.” Dumbledore’s words made Harry internally gulp.
He knew what Dumbledore was talking about; he wasn’t talking about a random stranger; he was talking about himself, the Dumbledore of this universe, who tried to bring Ariana back to life using the same ritual as Voldemort used to get his body back.
Now Harry was questioning himself and everything he knew about the old wizard, did the Dumbledore of his universe try to do the same thing? Could it be that Voldemort somehow found out about what Dumbledore did, and that’s why he replicated it on himself to get his body back? There were many questions, but there was a lot of shock too. Now he knew why people say to never personally meet your heroes.
“So… Will we destroy the Riddle family remains?” Sirius asked with a calm but serious expression.
Harry could tell that Dumbledore didn’t want to agree with Sirius, but he also knew that Dumbledore was a man who would do what he needed to do to defeat Tom.
“Yes… Let’s replace all the remains with fake bones,” Dumbledore said with a serious tone.
James decided to cast a notice-me-not charm, and Sirius another spell to dig the graves. Dumbledore then made the remains disappear, and then he placed fake bones transfigured with the sand of this place; in the end, they got rid of at least ten people’s remains. Once it was over, the four of them were walking in silence.
“Harry… I know that was kind of shocking, but please, don’t think that we're evil; we’re just trying to save the world,” Dumbledore said with an apologetic expression.
“I’m not the one you should apologize to; it’s the innocents, his parents, his grandparents, and the rest of his ancestors,” Harry said with a calm tone before resuming his walking.
The three older wizards looked at him with surprised expressions; they weren’t expecting him to say something so deep as that, but they couldn’t deny that he was right; they were just hoping they would be forgiven by the deceased.
