Chapter #28: Hermione's confession.

Hermione couldn’t believe it. The last thing she saw before she lost consciousness was Harry. He came to rescue her, and he wasn’t alone;  he brought an army of wizards, clearly showing how powerful his society had become. It seems like she was right; in the end, attacking Harry was a foolish idea- to attack his city; they were going to be massacred if they decided to get close to his city.

“Ah… My head,” she said as she opened her eyes.

Little by little, she started to grasp her situation. She was in a white room; there was a light bulb, and her parents were sleeping beside her bed. She then started to panic.

“Oh no… This is the worst outcome… It seems like all those adventures, all the magic, it was all a dream,” Hermione said as she saw her white cloak.

She realized that she was in a hospital, but before she could wake her parents to ask for explanations, the door was opened, and there he was: it was Harry, and he was looking good- well, good was an understatement; he was looking even more handsome than she was used to.

“Hi,” Harry said with a calm tone.

Hermione was a bit wary. Even though she was the one who started all this mess, she didn’t want to accept the fact that she had been completely unfair towards her best friend.

“Hi,” she said back, and then there was a silence.

“Would you like me to wake your parents? They’ve been watching over you since you arrived almost a day ago,” Harry told her in a calm tone.

“No, let them sleep. I feel like there are things we need to discuss, right?” She asked, a bit worried.

Harry nodded with a sad smile. Just like some people say, you should rush things that you don’t want to deal with so you can be done with them as soon as possible.

“Before we talk… Where’s Severus?” She asked with a worried tone. “He saved me, you know? He almost gave up his life for me,” she said with a bit of guilt.

She told the older wizard that she was in love with him; however, now that she was in the presence of Harry, she was starting to feel confused.

“He’s alive for now, but he’s in a critical condition. I don’t want to give you hope, Hermione, but it’s possible that he won’t make it.” Harry’s words were shocking, but Hermione didn’t like to run away from reality.

She closed her eyes and nodded; she felt like she wasn’t going to cry at any moment, but she wanted to be strong. She didn't want Harry to look at her in this state.

“So… What do you want to talk about?” She asked with a worried tone.

Harry remained silent for a few moments, and with a serious expression, he finally had the guts to say it.

“Why?” He asked with a serious tone.

Hermione looked at him with a confused expression; he needed to elaborate further.

“Why did you run away, Hermione?” He asked with the same tone as before.

Hermione now felt a bit guilty.

“We were best friends. You were supposed to be here with me, helping me shape this new society that I'm creating alongside our former friends; you were a key part of this,” Harry couldn’t believe it.

Then she started to sob.

“I’m sorry… I’m so stupid,” she said between sobs. “Ron convinced me that you were a potential threat, and because we had just defeated Voldemort. My fear was bigger than anything else; I didn't want to go through that again. I’m sorry!” She declared between sobs.

“So, it was him, the one behind this… I knew it, I’m going to kill him!” Harry was ready to storm off.

“No, Harry, please… It’s my fault too; I shouldn’t have fallen for that. I was so stupidly blinded by the love I thought I felt for him… And it led me to a place I didn’t want to be, and I had to do things I didn’t want to… I didn’t want to take charge of a city, Harry!” Her words surprised him.

“I can’t believe you would think that about me, Hermione,” Harry said with a disappointed tone. “We were friends for almost a decade; why would I do something to you guys?” He was terribly offended right now.

“I know, Harry… I know it was a stupid reason, but…” She stopped for a few moments. “I’m not like you, Harry,” she confessed with a sad tone.

“Yeah, I think that’s obvious. I’m not as sexy as you are,” he said with a serious tone.

He earned an interesting look from Hermione, and she couldn’t help but blush.

“No… I don’t mean it in that way, Harry… What I’m trying to say is that I’m your average Muggle woman; I can’t do what you do, Harry… I don’t know why, but I’m too strict when it comes to rules; the thought of destroying what made our society special made me feel scared by how easily you forgot about that,” she confessed.

“Well… Rules are made by those in power, and sadly I was the one who had all the power,” he confessed with a worried tone.

“I must admit that I was also worried that you would turn into a monster because no matter how good you think you might be, when there’s power involved, people always lose their composure,” she explained.

Harry remained silent.

“I must admit that when you started to tell me about your plans and what you wanted to do with the new civilization, I was scared.” Those words shook Harry to the core.

He was so used to people worshipping him that hearing that opinion was really weird; however, he had zero complaints. That’s one of the reasons why he was missing Hermione the most; her insight was really good. He needed someone like her to help him run this city.

“I was fearing that you would turn into the next Voldemort,” she confessed, but Harry wasn’t impressed with that assumption.

“To be honest, I was fearing I would turn into that too, but luckily there were always people by my side who helped me not to lose my mind,” he confessed, and she nodded.

“And yet even though I thought you were evil, here we are, being treated by the best medicine you could find… The magical people who work here must be impressive,” Hermione couldn’t help but feel awed.

“Not only do we have magical people at this hospital, but we have Muggle doctors too,” Harry’s words shocked Hermione.

“Wait, why?” Hermione was a bit confused.

“Because they are investigating; with the help of magic and science, we can make our lives better. Making these two different people work together has been one of the best ideas we came up with,” Harry couldn’t help but admit with pride.

Harry was surprised to hear those words because she had always dreamed about investigating magic with the help of science; it seemed like other people were living her dream.

That made her feel a bit sad; she wanted to experience that too; however, she didn’t say anything for now.

“Harry, I know I don’t deserve it, so… Can you take me with my family to a deserted island?” She almost begged, and Harry remained calm.

“Well, you can do that, or you can finally… Join our society.” The proposal was surely surprising.

Now she was conflicted.
