Chapter #29: Letting go.
It finally happened, the moment she feared finally happened, Severus was dead, he gave up his life so she could live, what an irony, the man who tormented her in the classroom and the most pro-Slytherin person you could met gave up his life to save a Gryffindor, and to make things worse, he gave his life for a muggleborn, not that he would care about the last thing but he was a Slytherin, caring about the blood status of a person was their most common trait.
Right now, she was the only one present in the graveyard. Her parents weren’t there because they didn’t know the man, which was a good thing. After all, if they knew that she fell for him, they would cause a fuss; that’s for sure. It didn’t make any sense to add more reasons for them to hate her after she erased their memory.
Luckily, when the spell that petrified everyone hit the world, all the spells were nullified, so her parents got their memories back, but that didn’t change the fact that she did something terrible. She knew she was a disappointment as a daughter, and them knowing about her love for Severus would only make things worse.
“Miss… I don’t think anyone’s coming. I think we should start with the burial already; it appears a storm is on its way,” the graveyard keeper said, and Hermione was about to nod; however, the sound of leaves rustling was suddenly heard.
She took a look to see the person who had arrived, and her eyes widened. It was Harry, and he came up dressed in a black tuxedo. He looked to be in a hurry, and he had brought flowers.
“Our leader!” The graveyard keeper said, surprised.
“Please, just call me Harry… Is the funeral over?” Asked Harry, concerned.
“We were about to bury him,” Hermione said with a weak smile.
Harry nodded and then placed the flowers that he brought on top of the coffin; he didn’t want to see the man.
“Very well, shall we say something?” Harry asked, a bit confused.
He’s not been to a lot of funerals; the last one he attended was Dumbledore’s, so this was almost all new for him. Hermione nodded and soon got ready to say something.
“Severus Snape… A man we all hated as we grew up, turns out that he was an unsung hero, someone who lived a double life, and who in the end, gave up his life to protect someone that he was supposed to hate, not love.” Those words surprised Harry.
It seemed like his suspicions were confirmed; something happened between them. However, he decided to let her talk.
“He thought he could never be loved but… At least I could say that I did for a short time… Thank you for everything, Severus. See you in the next life,” she said with a sad tone.
She didn’t know why she said those last words; maybe she was trying to make Harry jealous? She didn’t know if that worked, but if he were jealous, he didn’t show any sign of it. She nodded at the graveyard keeper, and soon, the man cast a spell to bury the coffin. Soon rain started to fall. As they left the graveyard, Harry pulled Hermione to a tree so they would be protected from the rain.
“Hermione… I’m so sorry for what you’re going through. I know there’s nothing I can do. If someone knows about the pain of losing people, it’s me, so the least thing I can offer you is my shoulder to cry on,” he told her with a smile.
Hermione was surprised by his attitude, then she couldn’t take it anymore and suddenly started to sob.
“Why are you so good? I did something terrible!” She said between sobs.
“That’s where you’re wrong, Hermione… You didn’t do anything wrong, you were just scared, I can understand your reaction, after all, I wasn’t the same person you were used to, I should’ve explained things better but I was in a rush back then, I need to revive more people or else I was risking dying and taking the secret of the cure with me and thus condemning humanity forever,” Harry told her with a sad tone.
Hermione nodded; his reasoning made sense.
“I guess things shouldn’t have turned this way had we listened to each other, right?” She said before sighing.
“Just like it has been since the start of humanity’s conflicts… Sometimes talking can save a lot of trouble, but I guess there’s no point getting stuck in the past. You had your adventure, and you learned about how evil people can be, right?” He asked with a serious tone.
“Oh yeah, more than you think, Harry… Losing a loved one isn’t something you want to see every day,” she tried to keep her composure.
“Come on, let’s get something to drink,” he told her with a smirk.
She couldn’t help but smirk back; she didn’t know if she and Harry would ever have the same relationship they had before they were petrified, but… The fact that he was able to forgive her so easily, so they could move on with their lives to build a new future, that was something she appreciated.
It was clear that she acted so immaturely because she was indeed still young; she was an adult, but she hadn’t been one for too long. Harry still grew older and wiser; that made her feel a bit weird, considering that it has always been the opposite case; she has always been the hardheaded one.
But now roles have reversed, and for some reason, she doesn’t mind it too much. Soon they arrived at his apartment, and Harry gave her a glass of something she hadn’t tasted.
“It’s fire-tequila; I found it at Malfoy's Manor,” Harry told her with a smirk.
“Did you steal from them?” Hermione asked with a smirk.
“Well, they were the only ones who had alcohol perfectly stored, that’s how I kept my sanity during those twenty years,” he said before taking a sip of his drink.
“One of these days you have to tell me more about those rough years. I’m really curious; the journey of a human to restore mankind... It’s beautiful if you think about it,” she said with a calm tone.
“Well, let’s hope it’s the kind of beautiful that only happens once, not once in a lifetime but more once in the span of the universe,” he said with a chuckle.
Hermione couldn’t help but smile; this was so strange. Harry was being so charming and so eloquent; this wasn’t the same man she used to know, and yet, she had zero complaints about it. She always knew he would be quite the charmer once he got out of his arse.
It seems like those twenty years served to make some interesting personal changes, and no, she’s not only talking about his body; she appreciates and loves to see it, but his personality was the most interesting change out of all this situation. She couldn’t help but feel a bit excited about this whole situation.
“Hermione… There’s something I would like to talk with you,” Harry started.
However, the brown-haired witch didn’t have time to talk; she decided to do something crazy. She had barely tasted her drink, but she already had more than enough adrenaline to push herself to kiss Harry passionately, and to say Harry was taken aback would be a complete understatement.
