Today we are going to learn how to play "My Way" by Frank Sinatra on the Ukulele. This follows the A B format that was so popular with pop music in the 60s, especially the pop music that had a strong influence of Jazz Standards. We will teach you part A, sing through the first verse, teach you part B and sing through the 3rd verse and then put it all together in a play-along that goes AABAB. Interesting as not a lot of songs in this style actually finish on the B par and a format that looks like AABA (think "Ain't Misbehavin'  - Tutorial here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0_gLV...) or AABABA (think Can't Help Falling in Love - our chord melody tutorial here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qcMHC...) is much more common.

We are doing this song in the style of Frank Sinatra but we need to give credit to the original song writers as well. This song was not written by Frank nor was it written for Frank, it was popularized by him in 1969. It is set to the music of the French song "Comme d'habitude" written by Jacques Revaux, a french composer, singer and song writer that did everything from pop music to scores for TV shows and movies. It was then performed in 1967 by Claude François. Later Paul Anka would write the English lyrics, and while he kept he same melody very slight modification, but the lyrical concept and the idea for the song are entirely different.

Paul was spending a lot of time with Frank at the time and what he called his "mob guy friends" and wrote the song from the lyrical stand point of Frank. For example the lyric "I ate it up and spit it out" is something Paul say's we would never have said, but he was trying to emulate the way Frank talked. Frank would record the song on New Year's eve 1968 in one take before going out and celebrating the new year. The song wasn't Frank's biggest hit in regards to billboard success but would later become known has his signature song despite Frank growing to hate it over the years. He thought it was self indulgent and arrogant according to his daughter. Today it is the most popular song for funerals in the United Kingdom and, bizarrely, it is associated with murders in the Phillipines with something that has come to be known as "My Way Killings."

This is a difficult song to perform well, it does not make it easy to sing. I commend you for your courageous spirit in doing this tutorial. I see you have taken some heat for it by I thank and commend you for it. I will sing it far worse on my patio, happily so. That’s what the uke is for happiness. Thanks Tyler!

Thanks for the love friend! I didn't think the intro was that bad haha. It is strange to me how comfortable people are bashing singing. Let's say the intro is a 7 out of 10. If you play Ukulele okay people say "Hey, you are getting better! That sounds great!" But if the singing is 7/10 people say "hey stop!" That is crazy to me, people have this expectation that the only time it is acceptable to sing is if you can do it perfectly, that is mind blowing to me. If it were anything else people would've told me "hey! You are getting better." But whatever, it helps everyone learn so I will just take the heat! life is good friend.
