Today we are a going to learn how to play Green Onions by Booker T and the MGs. This song, like many 90s kids, was introduced to me through the classic movie "Sand Lot" when the rich kids with the uniforms came up and talked trash to our working class heroes. That is when the red head let them know... "You play ball like a GIRL!" Classic scene, I have loved the groove ever since that moment.
At the heart of the song you have a 12 bar blues in F minor. Really cool but basic bas arpeggios give the song life. There are a couple of ways to rock out the principal bass groove and we will look at all of them, this song because it is an instrumental, isn't meant t to be play verbatim every single time, but rather it is meant to be jammed. That means it is a good idea to mix up the solo and improvise your own, tweak the timing of the bass line. The only thing that you don't want to move around is the double stop because they hit with the chord stabs at the perfect time.
After you get the groove down, which is essentially a canvas, we are going walk you through shapes 4, 5, and 1 of the F minor pentatonic scale. Because of the length of the fretboard certain keys have certain shapes that are going to be easier to play and more practical as well, for F minor or F blues, those shapes happen to be 4, 5 and 1. After that we will walk you through first solo, this one is essentially note for note the same as the first one in the song so you can play along with the song as well to try and get your timing down perfectly, but after that have fun and improvise your own solo! That is the magic of this style of music, taking a scale and making it into an awesome song, even if no one will every hear it again. It is magic!
A lot of this amazing sound comes from the incredible guitar playoff Steve Cropper. His rhythm skills are out of this world and a true testament to the power of rhythm guitar. So many people want to play lead that they completely ignore the value of quality rhythm playing and can only play open cowboy chords. Steve's rhythm chops are incredible as proven by these double stop rhythm. He is amazing.
