Today we are going to learn how to play one of the most iconic funk jams of all time, if not the most iconic funk jam of all time, Cissy Strut. Not too many bands were able to make a living playing instrumental funk, but that is exactly what the Meters did. The band formed in New Orleans in 1965 and it had Art Neville, one of the famous Neville brothers, on keys. This song is considered to be a "funk standard" which there are VERY FEW funk standards in existence.

The song is played in C Mixolydian, but the scale that is used to create the riff is actually the C minor pentatonic. Because the range of the original key is too low to play in standard tuning we had to play it with a Low G ukulele. To include everyone we also transposed the lick and played it in F Mixolydian as well, so no matter what kind of Ukulele set up you have you will be able to play along.

The song is just two riffs that alternate back and forth, we will teach you both of the riffs in the two keys and then I will walk you through the scales you have available in case you are ever jamming this song with a drummer and/or a u-bass player, if you want to see how it is jammed out and shredded check out John Mayer's version of the song!
