If you listen to the old school blues masters, whether Delta, Piedmont, Texas, any of the acoustic unplugged styles you are going to see them all playing with their fingers and if they are using a pick they are using it on their thumb. The blues wasn't intended to be just strummed through with one strum pattern for 12 measures. A good way around that is the shuffle, but another great way around it is some simple good ol' fashioned fingerpicking. Here is a basic finger picking base that you can add to your blues in G, and any key for that matter, to give your blues a little extra flavor.

Will Improve

  • Use of the thumb as a bass note
  • Alternating thumb picking
  • The "pinch" finger picking technique
  • Counting 1/4 notes
