Hey Tyler, something I still don’t get. ( well there’s probably a lot I still don’t get ha ha) anywho if I’m doing soling over a 12 bar blues in D is the part over say the A7 the D scale or the A scale?? Same question for G7

Tyler Austenfeld

That is a good question. You don't want to change scales over ever chord because you'll lose your sense of key, so you want to create a solo with the D blues scale as your base. That is the start, as you progress you can expand that to start to slip out of the scale a note here and a note there, but with the D being the foundation. If you look at the notes in the D blues scale D F G A C You'll see the G7 - G B D F and A7 - A C# E G Both have overlap with the scale, those are called "chord tones" and a good solo will highlight the chord tones over those chords, so you won't change the scale, you'll just use the notes in the scale that sound best over those chords. I like to mix in arpeggios with the scale as well though.

Thanks Tyler, that makes sense, also another reason to learn the fretboard
