Today we are going to be using 3rds, the most important interval in all of music, why is that? Because it defines your harmony. The 7th does the same to a lesser degree, as it is more associated with the extended harmony. By learning to understand the difference between the two we can learn how to replace our chords with cool diads, or two note faux chords. With shapes that use the C and E string as a root can use these chords to replace our regular chords, write riffs, layer harmony, inject in our solos, connect with scales, the possibilities are really limitless and the application is quite simply once you get the hang of it, even easier if you are familiar with the fretboard.

Will Improve

  • Understanding of how chords are built
  • Guide tones
  • Rhythm in general
  • Layer ukulele parts
  • Polyphony
  • Jamming with other players

What is the root & 3rd for the C-Chord?

Marvin

C: C & E. Cm: C & Eb The name of a chord implies the root. A minor third is +3 semitones from that root, a major +4. The fifth, which normally forms the complete triad chord is +7 semitones from the root note.

Marvin

How does this compare practically to power chords, which are formed with root & fifth and omnipresent in rock music? As I understand using the third comes handy if I want to emphasize the melody and fifth for progression, is this correct?
