So, most people probably know, or at least suspect, that it is Michael Jackson singing the chorus, but did you know the second voice that is singing with MJ is Jermaine Jackson? This #1 hit in Belgium, Spain and France was recorded at Motown studios and released in 1984.

I recently did a poll and asked what decade of music was the best, the 70s eventually won but the 80s gave it a run for their money. One of the more underrated songs from that era is "Somebody's Watching Me" by Rockwell. In the tutorial we also break down the melody and a synth solo, as well as that cool synth intro that is a Dm#5 arpeggio, the Bb adds some really nice tension.

The song key is a little strange. When music was recorded on reels sometimes the master was sped up or slow down to give the song a different feel, this would increase or decrease the pitch. This song is actually between Cm and C#m, meaning they more than likely recorded it in Cm but sped it up to make it more of a dance hit. This put the key between the two. That is why I did the song in Dm, you won’t be able to play along with the original recording no matter what key you choose, but Dm is much easier than both Cm and C#m. If you want to get closer to the original C#m is a better a choice, but it will still be off key.

Will improve

  • Playing a solid dance groove
  • Transposing synth to Ukulele
  • Synth arpeggios arranged for the ukulele
  • Diatonic melody in the key of Dm

One of the more underrated songs from that era is "Somebody's Watching Me" by Rockwell. The 1984 single was actually released on the Motown label and because of that they were able to score Michael Jackson to sing the chorus... with Jermaine on back up!
