Every wonder how the pros get there solos, licks and fills to follow the harmony? Do your solos and licks just sound like a scale aimless played over chords? A great way to help get over that hump is the Mixolydian mode. The mode was tailor made to play for the blues as it is built from the 5th degree, meaning it comes from a dominant chord. That is just a very fancy word for a C chord. So another way to think about it is the C Mixoldyian is the the scale that creates a C7 chord, so if you are playing blues and the rhythm is C7, what better scale to play than the one that literally created the chord? Today I am going to show you how to use it in a rhythmic context, first we will build a C major scale then we will flatten the 7th degree so you can how the C Mixolydian is built, after that we will put it into play with a really fun 12 bar blues in the key of C. We are using it today to create fills over bars 3 and 4 as well as 7 and 8, if you want to see a full blown solo that mixes C, F and G mixolydian as well as the C blues scale let me know and I'd be happy to teach it to you!
