8 Beginner Drawing Prompts + Real-Time Video (Patreon)
Content
Hello everyone,
✨ I have a fun video and some drawing prompts to share with you today! ✨
I spent an afternoon last week drawing out 8 prompts in my sketchbook for a YouTube video (you can watch it here) and wanted to share with you the full length, real-time version of the footage in case you wanted to draw along with me.
There's no voiceover, just the real process of me sitting and drawing, so next time you want a bit of company or a drawing buddy you can pop me on in the background 💖🖌️👩🎨
You can speed up the video in the playback settings if you want to make it a time-lapse, or mute the music to play your own.
8 Beginner Drawing Prompts
So, I have 8 simple drawing prompts that are beginner friendly to help you kickstart an art habit or give you a boost next time you have a bit of creative block.
Draw one, or draw them all - use them however you like! I'll link any related drawing tutorials that I have here on Patreon for them too.
Prompt 1: Rainbows
Rainbows are the perfect beginner art doodle because they are so so simple to draw, they’re joyful, and they’re a great way to experiment with colour.
Prompt 2: Flowers
You know that I love drawing flowers - they're easy, there’s so much variety, and they’re colourful. And because nature isn't perfect, it doesn't matter if you draw them a bit weird or wonky!
I have a few tutorials for drawing flowers: Draw Pretty Flowers Part One ✦ Draw Pretty Flowers Part Two ✦ Procreate Tutorial - Drawing Forget-Me-Nots
Prompt 3: Bugs
Bugs are a great intro to drawing some characters because they’re the easiest living thing to draw! They might not seem like much, but they’re made of easy shapes, they have simple faces, they don’t have arms or hands (thank goodness), and they’re cute.
Here's my tutorial for How To Draw Cute Bugs.
Prompt 4: Leaves
When you’re in the mood for some mindless doodling, leaves are the way to go. They come in lots of shapes and sizes, but they’re flat shapes so that makes them super simple to draw.
You can Google something like 'different leaf types' to find lots of great image references for different shapes.
Prompt 5: Animal Faces
Faces might feel a bit daunting if you’re a beginner, but I think animal faces are a lot more forgiving than human faces.
Some simple animal faces to draw are bears, bunnies, mice, cats and dogs. All of these animals have quite round faces, and then either a round nose or a ‘v’ shaped nose, and different shaped ears depending on the animal.
Here's a tutorial for Drawing Animal Faces.
Prompt 6: Human Faces
This one might feel a bit scary but try to remove any expectation that you’re going to draw a realistic human face, and enjoy experimenting with doodles of faces with different expressions because that can be really fun!
I like to draw a few circles on my page and give them all different noses, hairstyles, ears and accessories to give them different characters.
I have a couple of tutorials for faces: How To Draw Super Simple Faces ✦ Video Tutorial: How To Draw Your First Portrait
Prompt 7: Your Favourite Food
When you don’t want to come up with a new idea or design a character, you can always think about your favourite foods and draw them instead! Even better if you can have that food on hand so that you can use it as a reference (and then eat it of course).
Prompt 8: Your Favourite Hobby
If you’re feeling adventurous then you can draw an activity that you love, or even just the tools you use to do it.
It’s just a simple way to come up with things to draw because you’re familiar with your hobbies so it doesn’t require any grand ideas.
Use these prompts in any way that inspires you - casual doodles or full scene illustrations - it's totally up to you.
Happy drawing! 💖
