Mimi's Illustration Club October - Third Activity! (Patreon)
Content
Hello lovelies,
I've just drawn my final illustration for this month's club and ended up going with the composition of the two ghosts 👻✨
So far in the club this month we’ve:
filled a sketchbook page with ideas relating to the prompt
then we explored some composition sketches from those ideas
and now we can take one of those composition ideas and create a final illustration from it
If you skipped the first activities and came straight to drawing a final illustration that's totally fine!
So I’ll show you what I created for this activity based on a sketch from activity 2:
This is my final illustration for the prompt 'trick or treat'. At first they were just supposed to be trick-or-treating but then I realised they kind of look like they're getting married because of the costumes I gave them! I actually don't mind that though - it's kind of a cute spin on the original intention 💖
Let me show you a quick breakdown of my illustration process and the basic palette that I used (which you can download below if you'd like to use it yourself):
My process went a little something like this:
First, I drew a simple digital sketch based on the pencil sketch that I drew in the second activity. I changed the background a bit and framed the characters with a border of autumn plants.
Then I made the sketch layer about 30% opacity so that I could use it as a reference.
On new layers below, I coloured in all of the elements in a flat colour. Most elements go on their own layer, but for things like the leaves I put all of the same leaf type on the same layer together.
On top of the flat colour shapes I add lots of little details like lines on the leaves, stars and outfit details.
Then everything gets a pass of texture. I use a big, broad texture brush to give subtle texture on everything and then I do a couple of layers of more defined texture that double up as shading too.
Next, I added some simple lighting with a glowy effect using the technique from this tutorial, with some extra highlights added on top.
And that's about it!
Now it's your turn (yay!) - take one of the composition sketches that you drew in activity 2 and create a final illustration from it (if you haven't already). Or if you feel like it you can do a completely new idea!
If you do draw a final illustration with the prompt this month then feel free to share it with us over on Discord in the #final-illustrations channel or in the community chat here on Patreon. Everyone is welcome, and you can share what you've created for any of the activities at any time!
I'm really looking forward to seeing how your illustrations turn out ❤
