Hello everyone,

I've just finished drawing the challenge for this month's Creative Illustration Curriculum, and you can watch my quiet, real-time art process in the video above ๐Ÿ’– Beautiful Bluebells will be getting a version with voice-over next week where I talk about my process as I go.

My learning focus this month is exploring basic storytelling by capturing a specific moment in time with a character and emotion.

I set the challenge this month to be: draw a scene that captures a moment in time, using an emotion to help you tell the story.

I wanted to explore how a moment frozen in time can express an emotion like surprise, happiness or frustration, and therefore tell a simple story.

So I decided to express surprise as the emotion for my little story scene, and after brainstorming some ideas for what moments might cause a character to be surprised, decided to draw a dog that had escaped its leash!

So here's what I'm learning about storytelling this month:

Starting with an emotion you want to express and then brainstorming actions around that emotion is a great way to come up with story-rich ideas.

Different characters might be feeling different emotions about something that's happening, and that's even better!

Capturing a moment mid-action is a really fun way to bring life to an illustration.

This one was so fun to draw! Don't forget to download this month's curriculum pdf guide if you'd like to join in at home.
