Digital Brushes Suggestions! (Patreon)
Content
Happy Saturday everyone!I wanted to put together some suggestions for brushes because I know a lot of you use Procreate and the brushes I currently use are from Photoshop. I'd like to make my own brush set soon with some nice texture brushes, but I need to make sure they'll work in Procreate so I'm thinking about investing in an iPad to be able to make them in Procreate (I'd also be able to make some Procreate tutorials then!).
So the brushes I use at the moment are:
'Natural Feel' from Kyle's Megapack Paintbox - you can download the pack for free with a current Adobe subscription from this link here. I use this for pretty much everything! I'll change the size and the 'flow' of the texture to get the effect I want.
'Glazers Edge' also from Kyle's Megapack Paintbox - I use this for backgrounds because I like the glazey/watercolour effect of it
'Encaustic Grit' also from Kyle's Megapack Paintbox - I've just started using this recently to add some organic spotty texture to my illustrations. I don't use it too much because it's quite an overpowering texture.
But if you have Procreate:
I've done some research into what brushes I would go for if I had Procreate myself. I haven't tried these out and I'm not affiliated with any of them, they just look like they'd be quite nice and seem like they would fit my drawing style!
Procreate Default Brushes - It sounds like there are quite a lot of Procreate default brushes so I found this video quite helpful to narrow down a few for general use to get started. You can watch the video here.
Brush Packs for Purchase:
* Archi's Pencil Brush Set - I like this artist, and I think these brushes look like nice textured pencils and crayons.* RW Basic Marker Brush Pack - Another nice artist, their brush pack is very simple but looks like it has nice texture to it.* Sketching Essentials Brush Pack - Some quite thin, extra textured pencils. The texture on these might be a bit strong for a lot of people, but you might be able to adjust them.* Favorite Texture Brushes Procreate - This is a bigger pack, but could be a good investment for an all-round texture pack. It looks like it has some nice broad textures as well as thin ones. This is probably the one I would buy if I weren't going to make my own.--------
Brushes can be an overwhelming thing because there are so many options, so hopefully this list helps narrow things down a little bit.
Remember you can also adjust brushes within the software, try adjusting the 'smoothing' and 'flow' of a brush (I think Procreate has this setting) to see if that changes the effect you get with it, but if you want to keep your brushes at the default settings that will certainly simplify things and is a good place to start.
I'll be making this month's video for Beautiful Bluebells about adding texture to digital illustrations so I'll be sharing examples of how to use texture brushes to do that!
Hope you are having a lovely weekend, we went for a nature walk this morning and saw so many beautiful birds!
