How To Add Texture To Your Digital Illustrations (Patreon)

It's finished! The first lesson-style video is here and it's all about adding texture to digital illustrations.
In this video I take you through selecting and using texture brushes, applying texture with those brushes to shapes, and then walk you through my process of illustrating a simple illustration with the texture techniques we talk about. The beginning ends up being a bit of a brush tutorial but I use texture brushes so much that it felt important to describe all the different ways that I adjust them.
And now that I have an iPad I'm able to show you how to do these things in both Photoshop and Procreate!
I'm attaching below the Photoshop file from this tutorial (you can open it in Procreate too) that you are super welcome to open and look through if you like, it might be helpful to toggle on and off different texture layers to see the impact they have on the illustration and better understand how I've structured the layers. If you've not used clipping masks before you can move clipping mask layers around in my file and see how they interact with the layer they're clipped to.
You can identify a clipping mask layer by the little arrow pointing down that sits next to the thumbnail (I've circled an example below).
I'm also going to attach below the photo texture I used, which is a photo I took years ago (of some painted concrete I think?) so that you can experiment with using it like I do in the video.
And last but not least I'm attaching the three Procreate brushes that I modified for myself from the 'shale' default brush in case you want to play around with that too. Now that I have an iPad I'm going to make my own set of brushes soon and you'll be the first to know about them when I do!
If you're using Photoshop the brush pack I use can be found at this link here.
