Drawing Snapshot - Plant Lover Lady (Patreon)
Content
Hello my lovely flowers, I've just drawn this illustration that I'm going to share on Instagram this evening and wanted to show you a little breakdown of it. I'm also going to make it this month's downloadable print for Beautiful Bluebell patrons, so that'll be coming later today as well if you're a Bluebell!
I was inspired by the picture book Florette by Anna Walker for this illustration which I saw in the library recently, and love the idea of a space just filled with plants! At first I thought I just wanted a window to an outside crammed with plants but in the end I just drew plants everywhere.
So here's the my illustration broken down into some key stages. I started with my sketch quite simple but as I drew in colour I added more plants because it felt a bit too bare without them. This is one of those illustrations where I got carried away in the details so I have no idea how long it actually took me in the end - maybe about 4 hours?
As always, the basic steps for creating this illustration went a little something like this:
draw a sketch of the composition to guide where all the key elements will go
make that sketch 20% opacity and 'multiply' blend mode so that I can see through it onto layers below
on new layers, I colour in all of the main shapes, using the sketch as a guide
I'll add details like the facial features, leaf details, and any detail for the clothes
Then I'll go through and give everything a couple of layers of shading/texture, usually a broad texture and then a layer of finer shading
I'll usually do a few passes of details and shading as I keep seeing more things I want to add detail to
And that's it, in a nutshell!
I've been experimenting with my own brushes and I think they're almost ready! I just need one more to get a broad texture effect I want and then I'll be able to share them with you for Photoshop and Procreate.
Hope you're having a wonderful week!❤
