Helloo my beautiful flowers! After spending literally all of last week making assets and videos and goodies I'm finally ready to share with you my first ever official month of Mimi's Illustration Club! 🎉🌷❤
So here's how the club works:
At the start of the month I'll share with you a prompt phrase and the goal is for each of us to make an illustration from that prompt by the end of the month (joining is totally optional though!)
There are three creative activities each month that will lead us to the final illustration, and they reflect my normal illustration process but split into more manageable chunks
I'll share what I've created for each of the activities to give you some ideas and tips, and then you can complete the activity for yourself with your own ideas
Join me over on Discord to be able to share what you've created for each of the activities so we can all admire your work!
You can complete the three activities at your own pace at any time during the month, but I'll be sharing what I've done for them once a week over the first three weeks of the month.
Every Patron is welcome to join, and so are all mediums and experience levels!
The three activities each month are:
Activity 1 - Filling A Sketchbook Page
Activity 2 - Exploring Compositions
Activity 3 - Final Illustration
I've attached below a document explaining in more detail the three activities, and in each of the activity posts I'll share lots of info as well 😊
So let's jump into this month's prompt and the first activity!
The prompt for the first illustration club is 'a sunny afternoon'. Interpret it in any way you like!
The first activity is 'filling a sketchbook page' and the point of this is to have a pressure-free space to draw all kinds of ideas that come to mind when you think of the prompt, and see if you can fill a whole sketchbook page with them.
It's easiest to just draw the first thing that come to mind but often the most fun illustrations come from digging a little deeper and exploring more ideas relating to the prompt. I often explore a few ideas in my sketchbook before making a more developed illustration.
So I've made this video for you (you can watch above if you haven't already) so I can show you my creative process and share my thoughts about the activity - I hope you find it helpful! This activity is really fun and casual so enjoy playing around your own ideas of 'a sunny afternoon' and if you like you can take a photo of your page and share it with us in the #filling-a-sketchbook-page channel on Discord. I'll share a little Discord tutorial this week for anyone who isn't sure about using it (Patreon also has a tutorial at this link).
I really had fun filling this sketchbook page with sunny afternoon ideas that I'll turn into some compositions in the activity next week. I started with the most obvious ideas (like the sun!) and slowly explored more ideas like a little bird with a sunhat, and I think I have lots of ideas here that I could turn into illustrations!
When you're trying to think of things to draw for a prompt, try thinking about environments associated with that prompt, what kind of characters come to mind, or if there are any nature or animal friends that you think of. And remember that a prompt is there to spark ideas - what you create doesn't necessarily have to be literal or obviously linked to the prompt at all, so there is no right or wrong way to interpret it!
I hope you'll join me in this Illustration Club, and please let me know if you have any questions at all! ❤❤❤
