Hello my lovelies!

If you ever watch my Instagram stories then you probably know that there’s a bunny that lives in my garden somewhere and if I’m lucky I get to see them running around the garden munching on the grass and it’s my favourite thing!

So today I wanted to show you how I draw a bunny rabbit in a way that isn’t necessarily super accurate but allows you to customise them and give them character. Also drawing rabbits like this makes it quite easy to have them using their arms for things like carrying flowers and drinking tea (you know, normal rabbit things 😄).

So let’s take a look at how to draw a basic bunny rabbit, and then I’ll show you how I colour them in!

Let’s start with drawing the form of our bunny:

It helps to start with some simple shapes that we can build our bunny outline from, so to begin with let’s draw a simple circle quite low on the page.

Then, floating a little way above that circle, let's draw an oval that’s a little bit pinched on the right hand side (this will help us form their face in a moment).

To start drawing the outline, begin in the top left of the oval and then trace down and around the circle, back up to the top of the oval like I have here.

Now let’s add some legs. For the front leg we can extend it below the circle guide we drew in step 1 so that it sticks out the bottom, and for the back leg we want it to look like it’s emerging from behind the body. I also add two little lines for toes on each foot as well!

Of course the ears are really important for any bunny! Draw a long curved line from the top of the head for each ear, the one on the left I keep open at the bottom, and the one on the right ends at the line of the head (so that it looks like it’s behind the head).

Draw a little lumpy ball at the bottom left of the body for their fluffy tail, and then two curved arms in the middle of their body. I like to add two little lines on each hand as well for their fingers/paws.

Now we can add the final details like their face, whiskers and also some definition to their ears as well.

And that’s it!

Now let’s add some colour!

Using the outlines we just drew, colour in the whole body an orangey-brown, and then use a lighter colour for their tail.

Next I like to add some little bumpy lines to suggest fur detail. I draw these in a slightly darker brown and draw them all over except for on their face.

Then I add some pink to the inside of their ears, and also some pink rosy cheeks!

Now let’s give them a nice white tummy, and also add a little bit of white to their feet and their ears. I do this using a texture brush so that it blends in nicely.

Lastly, I add shading using a darker brown, focusing on the underside of their chin, and where their arms and legs meet their body. I also add a bit of shading to the bottom of their feet. And they’re all finished!

If you’d like to draw this bunny without the black outlines, you can follow the same colouring process as we just did, except instead of colouring in between the black lines, you can use the outline as a reference for drawing your colour layers.

If you’re drawing digitally you can do that by having the outline as a separate layer that is about 20% opacity and ‘multiply’ blend mode, and that means you’ll be able to see through it onto layers below. Now on new layers you can colour in your bunny and when you’re finished you can simply hide or delete the outline layer. Ta-da!

So that’s how you can draw a simple, cute bunny rabbit! I use these bunnies in all sorts of scenes, usually I draw a hat on them or give them some flowers to hold.

Hope you enjoy drawing this cutie as much as I did! 🐰❤️
