How To Draw Pumpkins (Patreon)

Hello everyone!
It’s the season for drawing pumpkins if you’re in the Northern Hemisphere (although I still like drawing pumpkins in October even when I’m in Australia) so I’ve made a little guide to drawing them!
They’re a great addition to Halloween or autumn scenes and super simple to draw, plus you can draw them in all sorts of shapes and sizes.
First, let’s cover the basic 'anatomy' of drawing a simple pumpkin.
I like to start by drawing the rough shape I want my pumpkin to be to use as a guide. I’ll show you a few more ideas for shapes in a moment, but a really common one is a circle that’s much wider at the bottom than at the top (so maybe more of a wide teardrop shape).
Then I start my outline by drawing a tall, skinny oval in the middle of the guide shape. I often make it about a third of the width of the overall shape, but you can experiment with how wide or narrow to make it.
Then I add each of the two sides by following the guide shape, but I dip in the top and bottom where they meet the middle oval. A lot of pumpkins have ridges so pinching in like this helps to give it that effect.
Now I’m ready to remove my guide and add a little stalk on top - how simple!
The great thing about pumpkins is that they come in all sorts of shapes and sizes, so you can really have fun with them!
Here are a few ideas for pumpkin shapes you could try, with the basic shape on the left and the outlined version with ridges on the right.
Once you’ve drawn some pumpkins, you’ll probably want to colour them in. We classically see orange pumpkins in October and around Halloween, but you can be creative with lots of different colours if you like!
I’ve coloured in some examples and attached below the colours that I’ve used for these pumpkins in case you’d like to use them yourself.
I hope you have lots of fun drawing sweet pumpkins!
