*please note the advent calendar downloads were exclusive to December 2023 patrons. If you were a Patron in December and missed the downloads then send me a message 😊*Hello lovelies, it's December 7th so I have another advent calendar gift for you!
I've made two brand new texture brushes for us to all play with that you can download below! 🎉✨🎁
I always think it's fun to try out a new brush because it breaks me out of my usual drawing habits and encourages me to try new things, even if I go back to using my favourite brushes afterwards.
To test them out I drew some holly using the Soft Brush for the leaves and the Big Fuzzy Brush for the berries and line details.
Here's a little demonstration of how I drew the holly:
First I drew three berries of different sizes using the Big Fuzzy Brush.
Then I used the Soft Brush to draw two holly leaves out from the berries at a diagonal (see below for some help with drawing the leaves).
For some line details on the leaves I used the Big Fuzzy Brush in a darker green. I drew the details on a new layer above the leaves, and made that layer a ‘clipping mask’ to make sure that the details were clipped to the leaf shapes.
And for the last step I borrowed my Soft Crayon brush from my second brush pack to add some simple texture to everything. I always draw my textures on a new layer, make that layer a clipping mask, and also make it ‘multiply’ blend mode so that the colours are stronger.
I have a video tutorial about adding texture to illustrations using clipping masks, you can watch it here if you’d like to see the process step-by-step in Photoshop and Procreate.
Holly has quite a unique leaf shape so here's a small breakdown of how I draw them:
So I hope you enjoy these brushes, you can download them below to get started! ✨🎉
To import into Procreate, click on the brush symbol, then on the ‘+’ icon. From your brush settings you can tap on ‘Import’ and select the .brushset file on your device.
To import into Photoshop, go to your brushes panel, click on the three line icon in the top right, and the select ‘Import Brushes’ and find the .abr file on your device. It’ll then load into your brush panel, ready for you to use.
