One Perfect Shot finally have the film they always wanted. And it's abominable. One of the worst trips to the theater I've had in a while, in fact. This is a 2-and-a-half-hour sequence of crosscutting that's desperate for you to think its collective motifs mean something. It leans incessantly on the cinematic language of arthouse horror, wanting you to admire its cleverness while cowering from actually say anything. One of my backers on here, Andy Reinsch, once observed with alarm the trend of increasingly respectable horror movies. Now I get it. This is the kind of movie he was worried about. Midsommar proves arthouse horror can be just as mechnical as blockbusters. Even for someone who loved Lady Bird and The Witch (because really, I'm this movie's target audience), this was exhausting. A24 has put out much better. When Eustace Clarence Scrubb on shrooms can't save your movie, you're in a dire state.
