This episode is a banger! One of the best of season 1, or the whole show, really. Fantastic guest cast (Xander Berkeley and Felicity Huffman!), great tense writing, and all the scenes between Mulder and Scully were AMAZING. Love it! 🐛

We also got some excellent dog acting in this episode. And an honourable mention for the acting from the CGI worms.

This was something of a "breakout" episode for the show. It consistently ranks high up in those "best episodes" lists. I remember reading somewhere that during shooting it the cast and crew began feeling like they had something really special going on. The similarity to 'The Thing' was largely in part because one of the production designers had worked on the the John Carpenter film.
