This is my all-time favourite episode of The X-Files. There are other episodes that are scarier or funnier or more exciting, but this is the one I love the most. Up 'til now, it's basically been a cop show about hunting aliens and monsters, but here we get so much depth to the emotions and to lots of the characters. We get these great scenes from Mr. X and Cancer Man and Skinner and Scully's dad. We get a visit from the Lone Gunmen (Frohike in a bow tie!) and we meet Scully's sister. And isn't it interesting that Mulder, who is willing to believe in all kinds of paranormal stuff, has no time at all for Melissa's New Age spirituality. He's just much more in sync with Scully, despite the basis of the show being just what opposites they are. Also, I like the Nurse Owens bit a lot -- it makes it clear that Scully wasn't just passively lying there the entire episode. She was aware of what was going on around her. I wonder what Scully believes the explanation for that could be...? I LOVE THIS EPISODE.

Oh, also -- I can give you a head's up ahead of time which episodes will have a different tag line in the opening credits (sorry I forgot for "Ascension"). The next one is the season 2 finale, so you can watch or not watch the title sequence as you please.

The episode is indeed a work of art, although my favorite S2 episode which turned me into a hardcore fan hasn't been posted yet. :)
