The tension in this episode is awesome!

If wanting to rip my hair out in frustration is great, then yeah! Ahaha, I really did like it though.

Wow, it was so enjoyable to watch this reaction! :D Why? Because this is *the* episode which -- during the show's original airing -- turned me into a huge fan of the show. I mean, I had watched TXF since the pilot, and I liked it very much from the start, but there was something special about "Colony" which took it to the next level for me, making me realize I'm watching something really special. What you refer to as the larger plot / main storyline, this is what in the XF fandom is known as the "mythology" or "mytharc". There are standalone episodes, mytharc episodes, and sort of hybrid episodes, like "Red Museum" for example. I enjoy all types of episodes, but it's the mytharc which drew me in and made me a big fan. Unfortunately, there is some e-fighting going on to this day as to which is "better", standalone or mytharc, but it's simply a matter of preference... and one can love and enjoy both. And nope, you did not mix up your shows when it comes to the toxic fumes, so yes we have seen this before indeed. In the season one finale, "The Erlenmeyer Flask", the alien-human-hybrid Dr. Secare was bleeding green toxic blood. The original series consists of nine seasons and two feature films. It's important to watch the two movies at a certain point in order to be able to follow. The first movie -- "Fight the Future" -- comes after the season five finale. The second movie -- "I Want To Believe" -- comes after the season nine (original series) finale. And many years later, an X-Files revival was made, a limited series event, what is today called seasons ten and eleven. The XF fandom is huge and very passionate. Reddit, YouTube and even Twitter are full of so many spoilers everywhere. My advice is to please try to avoid spoilers and keep enjoying the series. Not every episode will be incredible, and surely there will be episodes you'll strongly dislike, as with any other show out there... but overall you're in for a hell of a ride.

That poor actor has been in The X-Files twice now and been stripped down to his gotchies both times. LOL.
