I thought the story was great, and you enjoyed it too. I totally agree that the ending is terrible. I remember when I saw it for the first time I started hating Mr. X. Yes he has helped Mulder and he's his informant blah blah blah, but this showed a totally different side to him. Deep Throat deceived Mulder as well in episode "E.B.E.", but his motives were different, and he was a different kind of person, plus we never saw him do something like this. So yeah, it made be dislike Mr. X, and I think it's one of the worst endings. But awesome concept, great moments, overall very good.

This is the first Vince Gilligan episode (the guy who would later go on to create Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul) and I sadly have to say it's the first episode of The X-Files that I remember disliking. All the science is pure nonsense. Just complete gobbledygook. Dark matter has nothing to do with black holes, which has nothing to do with subatomic particles, which has nothing to do with matter-energy conversion. Someone just tossed a bunch of "science-y" words in a blender and vomited them onto the page, and The X-Files is usually smarter than that. Oh well. Luckily, Vince does a better job with his subsequent episodes.

Though I do really like the dark ending, so... I guess I'm a monster. ha ha.
