I really love this 3-episode arc here with "Leonard Betts", "Never Again", and "Memento Mori." I'm going to just paste my (very long) comment from another reaction to this episode that captures my thoughts on this one. That ending... 😢 Mulder and Scully don't know how to talk to each other. I love this episode. Not just because I love me a Scully-centric episode, but also I love that the show is acknowledging that Mulder and Scully's relationship cannot stay the same. Officially, they're just co-workers. Officially. But these two have big BIG feelings for each other. And I don't even mean romantic feelings (despite it being no secret I'm a huge M/S shipper). And they really don't know how to express those feelings. Or if they're even allowed to have those feelings. The things Scully told Ed in that crummy bar. She'd never tell those things to Mulder... because some of those things are about Mulder. And like she said, she gets to a point where despite being attracted to authority figures, she starts to resent them. I've seen people say Mulder is uncharacteristically mean to Scully throughout the episode but I don't agree. We know already that Mulder can be a tad insensitive, and we've seen that he can be a tad socially inept too. We also know that Mulder cares about Scully really deeply. I think making sarcastic comments and little jokes is how Mulder deals with having big feelings he doesn't know how to handle. Scully is having a crisis and wondering what the hell she's doing with her life, but she's not sharing any of that with Mulder. She's annoyed at him for taking her for granted (and he IS taking her for granted), so she's resentful. He picks up on the resentment, but doesn't understand what it's about, so he gets annoyed with her. Then at the end of the episode, full of feelings he has no idea what to do with, he falls back into snarky jokes. He was mad at her for bailing on the case, but she's right -- he's not her superior and should trust her judgment that it's a waste of time. I'm sure he was a bit jealous she went off on her own and hooked up with this random guy, but she's just his co-worker, right? He really has no right to feel jealous, even though he realizes that this rando got to see a side of Scully he's never seen and probably didn't even suspect existed (straight-laced Dana Scully gets an impulsive back tattoo and has a one-night stand...???). And then she scares the crap out of him by getting beat up and nearly killed by this guy, but is he allowed to feel angry at her for that? That she scared him so bad? All the stuff Mulder and Scully DON'T say to each other seeps to the surface in this episode. I absolutely love it. (sorry for the essay-length comment... I guess I had a lot of big feelings about this episode too ☺)
