There's no place like home. Especially on this rainy day, hope everyone has a great last day of their weekend✌❤ fam!

Rebecca Karsner

Another great pick! This is such a classic. About to watch right now because it's pouring down over here!! Lol hope everyone is having a great weekend!! 😁

BRENDA

Asia!!! Oh, this is going to be good. I think they will see that a 1939 movie is just as NEAT as the ones that are done today...and BJ not seeing all of it...Well....put your movie shoes on and get ready..... I AM:) This is going to be FUN!

Lewsifer

Love that ur getting more into the earlier classics, u have to watch return to oz sometime not a sequel to the original but to the book, it was also one of the most creepyest disney movies ever made.

ang

this is my campaign post for return to oz

Critical87

You guys NEED to watch the movie RUDY you will love it. Based on a true story.

Teri

"Terry" the dog (a a female dog) was Toto's real name. They officially changed it in 1942 to "Toto" due to the popularity of her character in the movie. See Google. Whenever they needed color in older movies they used "Technicolor". Google it. Can't go into detail.

Mezz015

Quite possibly the greatest movie of all time if you guys haven’t seen the Wiz with Michael Jackson Diana Ross and Richard Pryor you should it’s their take on the story of the wizard of Oz during the 70s

Carol Rocha

Awwww…..Yall!……this is one of the GOATs! Such a sweet simple tale that’s beloved by sooo many, including me. A really great message there, too. I’m so excited to have pulled up Patreon and seen this!! Hope you’ve got some more great ones lined up for this weekend! I’m ready!! And 3 and 2 and 1 and PLAY! Love yall!

Carol Rocha

Oh!!! You got on your GOAT shirt!! How appropriate for this film!!

fLYChiCA

So the witch is the woman that tried to take the dog in the beginning of the movie. What makes this movie special is this the first movie that was in half black and white and color

Darth Brooks

BJ coming back to seeing Brent Chrysler on the Tom Brady roast reaction as the lion 😂 he totally does though.

Awilda Luciano

Fun Reaction! And speaking of childhood classics, you have to top it off with 1964 Mary Poppins. By the way, 1895ish was when color was used in film

Kimberly Tyda

This version is the original, no updates. The movie industry was using Technicolor as early as the late 1920s. It was used quite a bit in 1930s films. Wizard of Oz did take color filmmaking to the next level. Also, that is Judy Garland's voice. She was 16 when the movie was made and was already a musical star in the film industry.

Kimberly Tyda

What I remember most about this as a kid - it was played once a year on TV, usually around Easter. We waited all year to watch this on TV! No VCRs then. And while 1939 may sound really old, that is 3 years after my dad was born and he's still around. 😊

🖤Bonita☆

This was SO FUN! omg every new character, Asia's face like.. what in the actual.. ?? Hahaha! Seeing it as an adult, it's a total fever dream of a movie. The practical effects are outstanding though! And BJ jamming out to each song! It's pretty hard to believe this was made 85 years ago! Some humor didn't stand the test of time, but actually more did than didn't. (My fam would always crack up at the lions song!) Loved it!

Carol Rocha

Actually I think the technology in this movie was great -considering it was 1939! Man! I didn’t know it was that old either. Seriously I think they did a great job for a movie of that time. You’re gonna love it!! 🥰

CD

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR REACTING TO THIS!! I watched this so many times on the tv when I was young ( as BJ said, it was always on TV and my parents recorded it for me on the VCR!) and "somewhere over the rainbow" is one of my most fav songs ever (even sang it to compete for a music scholarship in college) Loved seeing you guys experience it, brought back memories for me of watching it. (Asia's face through the first half was hilarious!!- the disbelief! And BJ dancing along 😂 LOL.) and BJ "someone need to call PETA" on the wicked witch" "where is the wicked witch of the south" - you guys have just made my day by watching this! If you get time, please do "gone with the wind" (not politically correct of course nowadays but taken in the context of the time period it was written /filmed in) but it is still a movie worth watching and Vivien Leigh and Clark Gable as Scarlett and Rhett are classic- lots of famous lines, great story, Plus Hattie McDaniel I think was the first Black actress to win an Oscar and recognition for her role in it as the famous « mammie » , so a historic moment! )

Dan Gershgol

So happy you got to watch this. Having Oz in color was totally intentional. Movies in color were around in the teens and 20s but did not become widespread used until the 30s. Technicolor process was very expensive to film.

Maritza Navarro

It was a pleasure watching this wonderful classic with you both. This movie is still one of my all time favorites.

BRENDA

Also, when you think about how the Wicked Witch uses fire (throwing it, arriving/departing in fire.)....then the water part makes sense that that would happen.

Rebecca Karsner

So glad you enjoyed this Asia!! This movie still holds up!! It's still visually and technically stunning! I remember seeing a documentary about the making of this film and they said they used a sock as the tornado in the opening scene.. like what?? A sock!! Lol that's crazy!! Judy Garland was so talented!! Unfortunately she was very mistreated in Hollywood. She was even told to watch her weight while filming this. She was even on a diet of coffee and cigarettes to help her keep her weight down. CRAZY!! This is such a beautiful film but has a lot of darkness behind the making of it. You guys should check out some videos on YouTube going into some of it!! It's crazy!! Anyways!! That was an awesome reaction!! 😁😁

sharkey197

Actually, color technology existed from the early 1900's, but it was extremely expensive. That's why most pictures were in black and white back then, except for very special projects which this one definitely was. Another movie that came out the same year that was completely in color was Gone With the Wind. I grew up with black and white tv and watching this every year when it came on TV I always wanted to see it change from the sepia tone to the color. It wasn't until I was in my twenties that I saw it in color. I also loved being able to see the horse change color as well! It is truly a tribute to the movie makers of the time that this film still seems to magical today, to all of us raised on CGI special effects. As Asia pointed out, the backdrops were painted and the whole film was done on sound stages in the studio, but the brilliance of the film due to the fantastic performances, state of the art craftmanship and attention to detail is superb. So glad you watched this one. Please do more classics!

Justin Doggett

Asia. The 3 farm hands were the scarecrow, tin man and lion. Also, the crazy woman at the beginning that tried to take Toto was the wicked witch of the west. And yes, that was Judy Garland’s real voice singing. What a great film and reaction! Thanks for the share!🤓🤠

Amy Reis

The wicked witch was the lady who took Toto in the beginning of the film.

RollingAcres47

I absolutely LOVE this movie! Margaret Hamilton, who played Mrs. Gulch/The Wicked Witch of the West, went on Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood in 1975 to show kids the make-up etc. of how she became the witch because it was an such an iconic scary character to kids.

Bill B.

LOL I died when BJ compared the Lion to BERT Kreischer 😂😂😂😂 never ever thought that but he has a point! I always thought this was the first ever color movie but I guess I’m wrong. I bet that color was super expensive back then, this is also made right as the USA is coming out of the Great Depression…. And to think about it, 1939 is when Hitler invaded Poland and World War II began in Europe! Our boy Dick Winters was probably 20 years old or something. Crazy.

astrobuckshot

I adored this movie as a kid. Such a classic! This will be fun watching with you!

Carol Rocha

Asia, if you look again at the faces of the three men there on the farm, you’ll see that the one that swirled around and almost fell down in the first scenes-was the scarecrow. The largest man was the lion- you can tell if you look at their faces again. And the third one was the tin man. Auntie Em was not there. The wicked witch of the west was that old woman who was mean to Toto and came to take him at the first of the show. And yes, she just got hit on the head and “dreamed” that the house flew and fell on the wicked witch of the east, causing all the commotion that set her on the road to the wizard of OZ. And yes, it’s true they already had everything within them. ❤️ You saw that the opening credits said the movie was in Technicolor. That’s what they called the technology they used for movies in color back then. It was much more effective when they began the story in black and white or sepia, and then when she opened the door to the magical land of Oz, it was brilliant colors! This really is a classic and its message never gets old. I’m glad you watched it now and can appreciate it so much more!! This movie was already 30 years old when I first saw it as a child. Hard to believe. Really Enjoyed your reaction!!

Renee S

Well, now you have to get into The Wiz from 1978 :)

Tek

What a pleasant surprise, it was a treat to watch this movie with you guys. Great reaction. Another classic you should watch is "The Sound of Music", I think u will enjoy it 😊

BRENDA

It was exactly like this in 1939, so people that saw it in the movie theatre saw the same wonderful color change that you both did.

BRENDA

If you listen at the beginning of the film, when the farm hands are talking to her, they all mention things that are connected to the 3 characters in OZ. And Asia...Dorthy did go to OZ, and all of that was REAL.....REALLY , IT WAS. When they filmed on location in OZ, the munchkins wore their normal street clothes too--all the colors where real and true to life. This movie is based on fact, according to the City charter of Munchkinland. FACT!

Deborah Lewis

My heart breaks for the little girl Asia( at 5, should of been watching this childhood experience instead of Freddy...my daughter was introduced to both...age appropriate ) Bj was so enlightening, reminds me of the song by Bonnie Tyler..."I need a Hero" you are the wind beneath her wings😇🥰

Kimberly Tyda

If you want to see Judy Garland in her 2nd best movie (after this one) try Meet Me in St. Louis. It's a great one to watch around Christmas.

TORI

I was shocked when Asia said she hadn't seen this movie. Now that you have, you need to watch The Wiz (starring Diana Ross and Michael Jackson) if you haven't. It's one of my favorite musicals and was a significant to my childhood/ adolescence.

MichelleMyBell

Willow was a good movie growing up too

MichelleMyBell

A favorite movie of mine is Some Like It Hot w Tony Curtis and Marilyn Monroe. I think you two would enjoy it. Another good one is China Seas made in 1935 with Clarke Gable (Rhett Butler from Gone With The Wind), and Jean Harlow. ❤️❤️🙂

Brina Blue

I hope that they decide to watch it soon too! I think it would be good for them to watch it when this one is very top of mind.

Delia Sewell

Gone With The Wind was in color & I think it was 1938 film.

Wendy

So glad you guys watched this. This is such a classic and its the original movie, not a remake. Its was made from the 1900 book by Frank Baum The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. Loved your reaction. Judy Garland had such a beautiful voice and she was in many popular musicals. Thanks for this. :)

Karim

The Lion jumping out of the window always gets me. Y’all can stay here if you want to, bye! 😆😆😆

Joseph Cain

I believe this was the first movie to ever be in color...correct me if im wrong

Jesse McAdams

And whatever happened to Toto...

Kelsey Perez

My favorite movie of all time! And yes, Judy Garland had one hell of a voice. She was 16 when she filmed this. Also gotta give props to the practical effects! For 1939, that tornado was impressive!!

Rhonda Turner

It came out the same year as Gone with The Wind, which was also in Technicolor I think...

Cynthia McDonald

This was a fun reaction movie. The Ruby Slippers are displayed at the Smithsonian in Washington DC. It is an iconic movie. 💕

Cynthia McDonald

I definitely recommend “Meet Me in St Louis” to watch around Christmas time. Another Judy Garland classic.

Rhonda Turner

I know how long ago this was (though even I was shocked when BJ figured out that it was nearly 100😯) - that being said, many movies in the forties were made in technicolor, but 1939 was the year it was introduced to the world through "The Wizard of Oz," and "Gone with the Wind" - I read once that many movie critics felt that in any other year a movie of GWTW's mass - it was sooooo long - it would automatically have won an Academy Award, but no one could deny how incredibly great "The Wizard of OZ" was, so it won the Oscar that year. Anyway, I imagine it was pretty expensive to film in color at first (like any new technology) which would be why so many movies were still made in black & white until (well, maybe even in) the sixties. I don't think movies were made in color consistently until the 70's.

Cliff Adams

Three color Technicolor was the first good color film process. Other two color processes preceded it. Disney paid Technicolor for exclusive use of the three color from 1932 through 1935. The short cartoon “Flowers and Trees” was the first released and 1935’s “Three Little Pigs” was more popular than the feature films which followed it, which led Disney to make “Snow White” in 1937. By 1936, other studios used the expensive process, which led to “The Adventures of Robin Hood” and “Gone with the Wind.” Good color was around from the early 1930s, and lesser color was around for more than a decade before that. I recommend Robin Hood with Errol Flynn as your next step into 1930’s films.

Hawaiian_boy

Reason the colors look so bright is because they built and hand made everything in the Movie including the background, like the emerald city was hand painted.

Donna Bannister

Aww this movie is old😂 I just asked my mama if she feels old?? She was born July 2 - 1938 and her reply... "I ain't 100 yet!!!"🤭😂hehe I loveee listening to these classic songs and man could they all sing💯🎶👏✅️❤️❤️

Pink Martini AZ

Color and Technicolor has been around a lot longer. It was just really expensive and only used for really big or special productions. So Wizard of OZ and Gone With The Wind are far from the first. They were the first to make such grand use.

Pink Martini AZ

Bj was cracking me up and I especially love his response to Asia if it was all a dream… or was it? Hahaha. I alway cry at the end when she is happy to be home and says there’s no place like home. Just like the girl in the movie Girl Interrupted that you saw recently. We watched on TV every year. Before cable when the whole family watched things together. To your question Asia, this is the original version. Isn’t it glorious and special?

Wolf

wow horror movies in may.

BOOMSTICK

I believe what made this movie so historical is that it's the first color movie. I could be wrong. Also, the lion is incredible, my favorite. Dorothy HAD to go on her journey to realize how much home truly means. Also the witch was the old lady trying to put down TOTO...revised...not the first color film, but it did revolutionize the way color film Was used in film.

Heather

There are actually 4 pairs. The pair at the Smithsonian, 1 pair was bought at auction by Leonardo DiCaprio and donated to another museum, the other two are in private collections except for several years when one pair was stolen. They found them several years ago.

JBGirlNextDoor

Nope, you're correct. That's the first time color was seen. Can you imagine how magical that was in the theater? This was fun to watch with you guys. I saw some parts I had never seen. 💗

Bonnie Smith

whoa whoa whoa.. lol I'm a little shocked you havent seen this one yet! Don't judge a movie by the year it came out! hehe Remember Its a Wonderful Life? Can't wait to watch a long. Got my [early] dinner (woke up super early today lol) and ready for a movie! EDIT: Man, the Over the Rainbow song always makes me a little emotional.. if you haven't yet, you must listen to IZ's version of it. So beautiful.

Bonnie Smith

LOL I'm loving watching Asia look like "what is going on here" for some scenes and BJ is knodding his head to the music, and smiling

Angelfish Luva

Waiting every year for these movies to play were like their own holidays. This movie, A Christmas Story, A Wonderful Life and many others.

Todd Williamson

It was shot in mostly Technicolor but certain sequences in sepia-toned (brownish) black and white. Sepia-toned is what Asia was talking about, I think.

Mike the Ginger

Question for Asia and BJ, did you recognize any of the iconic lines that have been a part of American culture for the last 90 years? "I'll get you my pretty...and your little dog TOO!" or "Toto, I have a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore."

Todd Williamson

From my research, Technicolor is the first color in cinema. It was a very big camera with colored mirrors, or something like that. I think tv shows at the time still had black and white, but this movie was the very first movie with color, with the new technology at the time.

Rebecca Karsner

Anybody ever watch this film synched up with Pink Floyd's Darkside of the Moon? It's actually quite amazing how well they go together. I highly recommend it just for the experience 😁😁

Samira Abdulmalik

Now you have to watch the Wiz, which is the black version of the Wizard of Oz. You can never go wrong with Michael Jackson and Diana Ross.

Head Trauma Heather

Youre thinking of Bert Kreisher. More old movies please. Meet Me In St. Louis W/ Judy Garland

SixEight Guy

First color movie was back in 1890-something. But you had to use a special projector invented by Thomas Edison to see it in color. I can't think of the specifics off the top of my head, though.

SixEight Guy

The Wiz is fun and has its place, but it's not like it's remake. It's its own thing.

SixEight Guy

It's not the first color movie. I took a film class in college a billion years ago and I seem to recall that the first color movie was in 1890-something. But it had to be viewed through a Thomas Edison projector of some sort.

SixEight Guy

You're thinking of Bert Kreischer, BJ!

Pink Martini AZ

Now I have “ease on down, ease on down the road” in my head.

bbbfst

Okay, Asia's realization that the scarecrow, lion, and tin man were Dorothy's farmhand friends had me in stitches. Asia and BJ, there's a lot of interesting background to this movie. Judy Garland -- btw, the mother of Liza Minelli -- was only 16 and yes, that was her singing. There was another actor -- Buddy Ebsen -- who was originally cast as the tin man but he had an allergic reaction to the silver paint and was replaced. The wicked witch -- Margaret Hamilton -- was burned pretty severely during the scenes where she appeared/disappeared in the smoke and flames. All sorts of things and worth reading up on. It should be noted that Judy Garland was treated horribly by the studio. They put her on pills to control her weight which led to lifelong addiction problems and ultimately her early death.

David Croft-Ogawa

Congratulations, Miss Asia, I’m so glad you are challenging you misconceptions about older, classic films! Now you guys can start to listen to some Judy Garland! Start with, “The Man That Got Away.”

ChinchillaCrystal

The ruby slippers (1 pair of 4 that were used in the movie) were stolen from a museum in 2005. They remained missing for 13 years. In 2018, the FBI conducted a sting operation and were able to find and return them to their owner. The two thieves in on the heist thought the shoes were covered in real rubies, which they planned to pick off and sell. While the slippers were very valuable due to their place in film history, it turns out they were covered in sequins, not rubies!

Lady Shar

Not only were her friends from the farm in Oz, but the woman who was trying to take Toto was the wicked witch. Also at the beginning of the movie the friends all tell her about using her brain, having a heart and having courage when dealing with the mean woman. Great Reaction as usual guys. Loved it. If you want suggestions for older classic movies I recommend Sergeant York

Stevie Sandoval

Please do Beetlejuice, especially with the sequel coming out.

Mami's Gatos

Aww! Yall never seen this?it came out the year my grandma was conceived!! And it had had color, which was a big deal. It was my favorite when I was little and I know it word for word. I used to rewind the tape back ans watched it over and over. I still have the vhs from the 50th anniversary!! The story behind what Judy garland went through while filming this is seriously fucked up!! She was only 15. Rip to my mema and rip to ms. Garland.

Mami's Gatos

Yes. There's only 7 pairs of ruby slippers were made ever in the world. Courtney love has a pair, Julie Andrew's had a pair and I know elton john has a pair.

Camping Pups RV

Wizard of Oz was the first movie (or one of the first) to be in color. they used the transition from B&W to color to show the difference between OZ and Kansas. It was a big deal at the time since people hadn't seen color movies yet.

Hannah Gs

Not the first color film, but I believe it was the first filmed in technicolor (before that most color films had color added afterwards, with a very limited color palette) So still a huge thing to see at the ti9me! look up a film called "a trip to the moon" (1902) to see what color film looked like before technicolor

Camping Pups RV

maybe not the first. however, it was not normal to see color when it came out. I remember reading about the impact on audiences in theater when it transitioned from B&W to color

Bmac Tattoo

Why did she make Dorothy go through all of that if all she had to do was click her heels? Imagine you were rich and gave your kids a huge house and a Ferrari... would it be better for your kids to work hard and earn those things themselves? Why should they work for it if you can just give them those things? To go through the experiences and appreciate things/people/the journey.

Amy Marie

This was my favorite growing up! Also watch the Wiz, so fun. Theres also a movie called Return to Oz by Disney wasn’t a big box office hit but has a huge cult following! Your fans would enjoy! I would say it’s the sequel to the wizard of oz but not to the 39’ movie production more to the Story in general if that makes sense, more similarities to the books.

Jon

The Adventures of Robin Hood, which came out the year before (1938, also MGM), used the same technicolor process. I just watched it the other day. Got to love those technicolor greens and reds. I think technicolor existed before in a different capacity, but this particular version of technicolor really made certain colors pop. It was a jump in film quality.

girlygirl9983

I don’t remember laughing this much watching this movie when I was a kid, like the acting and singing was so funny a lot of the time but such an amazing movie for its time nonetheless

RollingAcres47

"Let the joyous news be spread, the wicked old witch, at last, is dead."

Greg In East TN

I used to watch this movie every year for years and years. I have the boxed set now with extras. But, if you haven't seen it yet, you really must see OZ, The Great And Powerful. It's a prequil that explains a lot about how OZ got there, where the wicked witches come from, etc. I think it's a great movie. Check it out! It's from 2013, not 1939. Oh, here's some trivia for you, the Wizard of OZ was beaten for an Oscar that year by Gone With The Wind. It seems to have been a good year for movies.

BRT

Yep. This was the perfected Technicolor process that provided a true full spectrum of color with improved clarity of details too. This was called Process 4 and combined three film strips to create the colors with the edition of a 50% strength black and white strip to improve contrast and sharpen the details.

Renee

I would LOVE to see you guys react to Wicked!
