season 3 is my favorite season. so many great scenes.

Mayne

Feels like I'm the only one in the world who loved Season 2 the most. I liked the Sobotka storyline.

"RIH, Stringer Bell" (Acronym for H makes it rhyme)

So I have to disagree with your point of view on the safe zone. In my opinion the safe zone made sure at least the child dealers weren't using violence against one another under the cops supervision. Even the ones that got time-out were able to get guided into the boxing program. The black families seemed to like that the streets they were living on were clean. Even mentioned the that they liked the fact they have a personal relationships with the police now. "They know my face and I know theirs." There were even clean needle and condom exchange programs. Some people say this encourages drug use but if no one does anything, viruses will spread. There will always be some sort of drug seeking behavior and someone to supply it anyways. We should treat drug addiction as a disease instead of a crime. The creation of the free zone gave our main cast and crew the time and resources to go after the violent criminals like Avon and Marlo. I really felt bad for the Major that got demoted just due to just trying his best to solve a problem. I mostly blame the police commissioner for ruining the experiment. He was so worried about taking the blame that he went around the mayor's back before he could think about a way to meet them halfway. I don't agree that the free zone created a bigger problem. The ministers and teachers were all writing letters about how thankful they were. This strategy has been implemented in Los Angeles and some places in Oregon. Skid Row in LA has a soup kitchen and medical care for the unfortunate. The homeless don't go past a certain border. The block next to it is a really clean Japanese neighborhood. It's night and day. Anyways I feel like I had to post my thoughts when I saw your reaction to "Littlefinger's" speech. I don't think fighting the drug war the same way as before by cracking heads was what the writer's of this show wanted to convey this season. Still enjoy all of your reactions.

Hamsterdale is a genius concept imo. Yeah its ugly but one thing that is for certain: drug users, dealers, and lords will ALWAYS exist. As things were before Hamsterdale a lot more innocent people would be affected. Just like how that kid got offed at the beginning of the season from stupid crime war. Just like in real life how unwilling participants suffer. Drugs will NEVER go away. The drug on it will NEVER end. Its not perfect but I definitely feel what Colven was coming from.

TheBigKim

While it's not my favorite season, I really don't get the hate for it. Still a great storyline like you said.

I am loving how much you guys are in to this show!! Some trivia: In one of the scenes where Mayor Royce is trying to figure out how to keep Hamsterdam going the guy who says “pretty soon they’ll be calling you the most dangerous man in America” was Kurt Schmoke who was the actual mayor of Baltimore from 1987-99. During the height of the crack epidemic he created decriminalized drug zones in Baltimore and was labeled the Most Dangerous Man in America by those pushing the War On Drugs.

Russ D

Also I know it feels like the end I remember thinking that too at the end of this season but season 4 elevates this show to top of the list for most Wire fans

vceisdead

Idk why it hit so hard when Avon turns behind like he was expecting to see Stringer lmao

M4RRS

It is called "Hamsterdam" (as in a misnomer of Amsterdam).

Went to work, chilled with my family for my birthday, now I get to relax and watch this with you both! Great day!!! Thanks for the drop!

The "toy store" refers to the FBI friend (his name escapes me at the moment) of McNulty's, along with his access to fancy "toys", as in special technological devices for tactical use. There was a brief exchange during a recent episode in which McNulty showed up to work, and was surprised to see the FBI guy present, then made some quip regarding his presence. As FBI guy & Lester Freamon were fiddling with the hookup of some high-tech device, FBI pal responded by informing McNulty that Lester called him up in need and also jokingly remarked about how he is only truly loved for his "toys". However, in episode 11, the FBI gent told McNulty that (for once) McNulty would not need him to find what he was looking for this time around, since several of the device that McNulty wanted were already on-hand, which McNulty could easily obtain access to upon his own accord.

I loved S2. Chris Bauer was fantastic as Sobotka. One of my favorite characters of the series.

Sapporo Dragon

Did I tell you the series was good or what? I’m just surprised more people aren’t tuning in to watch.🤷🏻‍♂️

OMG your faces when you knew!!!

FYI: Carcetti's surname is pronounced like "Car-Ketti", not "Car-Setti" / "Car-Chetti".

M4RRS

Another FYI: Eunetta (Perkins), who they were speaking about giving/getting the proverbial ax, is not Lieutenant/Major Cedric Daniels' estranged wife. The wife's name is Marla (Daniels), whereas Eunetta is an entirely different person altogether. Of course, it seemed as if BJ did eventually realize this when he said, "Okay, maybe I got it wrong."

I agree with your points about the complexity of the drug problem and that the city can't just police it's way out of it. However, the experiment they set up was incredibly problematic, both ethically and legally. Even if the city officials agreed to look the other way, the feds would be crawling up their asses and it would be brought to a halt anyway. In most cities, there is no "dead zone" like they had here. Pushing the problem to one area usually means it gets pushed to the lowest income neighborhoods where residents are already struggling to keep themselves safe. I work in San Francisco's Civic Center. The neighborhood is next to the lowest income, highest drug activity area in the city, The Tenderloin. Families live there. People have to walk their children to school past people who are laying on the sidewalks, shooting up drugs, there are feces and dirty needles on the street. During Covid, the city set up a Navigation Center, which ended up being covertly used as a safe injection site for illegal drugs. The effect on an already struggling neighborhood was terrible. There were drug dealers and open drug use everywhere.

Did anyone else notice that when they hit Hamsterdam they paid homage to the Air CAV scene in Apocalypse Now by playing Ride of the Valkyries for the loudspeaker. Also, the line, “outstanding red team, outstanding, get yourself a case of beer for that one” who was taken directly from that movie. I actually rode through where they filmed the Hamsterdam scenes last time I was in Baltimore. It was a vacant grassy lot, but you could still see the road that ran through there where everything was filmed. I did not get out of the car btw. 😬 The next season deals with politics more as well as the school system. That season ran a little bit slow for me, but it is very important to the further development of the story.👍🏻

ALLAN

What a show 😍

Slim Charles is a real warrior 🔥

when Avon gave cutty the money for the gym, it was really about keeping them kids away from the streets. He kind of believed in that sort of thing.. just was born into the life of crime. he knew Cutty could show them kids a better way.

Stan Ross

Street. Police. Politics. What's in store for season 4?

Season 4 (and 5 too if I remember correctly) have the best cover version of the opening theme song! I've been patiently waiting for it this entire rewatch.

Y'all Will Realize After You Rewatch The Series A Couple More Times That Asia's Take on Hoe-Mar Primarily Going After Stringer Bell instead of Avon Barksdale Was Incorrect. Hoe-Mar Was Going After BOTH Of Them Since Brandon got What He Deserved in Season 1. Even After Hoe-Mar Almost Got His own Grandmother Shot, He Said Avon Barksdale Had To Go and That incident Took Place in Season 3. Also The Idea To Use Hoe-Mar To Take Out Brother Mouzone Was Proposition Hoe, I Mean Proposition Joe Idea Solely. Prop Simply Used Stringer To Bring his Idea to Fruition. #TellemTANKseddit

real talk and it is called "harm reduction" in the real world. I've worked in this field with the homeless population for the last 25 years.. drugs and crime will happen regardless. how do you create concepts within community that keep more people safe than not? also, you will notice when the mayor had the health dept representatives in his office they were speaking to how they could ideally support the sustainability of the project with government funding.. using real world harm reduction practices like clean needles, condoms, non judgemental personal workers, health workers, etc. harm reduction isn't an abstinence approach, instead it meets humans where they are at and over time and through several approaches, one can learn and reduce the harm they are doing to themselves slowly and surely, supported and at a reasonable pace. cutty is a good example of it in the show. he provides a boxing gym so young people over time can channel their energy in a positive light, we don't expect them to become whole at once but with dedication to the outcome of being better and lessening your exposure to harm.. the show exemplifies this in a substance use perspective also but on 10 for entertainment purposes. but in reality, HR is good community work when done in more subtle and supervised environments. obviously this is a show but it always stuck me that the writers included such a brave concept and humanized it for those that expect drug use to go away or people to stopselling drugs overnight, or the idea that just locking everyone up solves the situation and rehabilitates people. it is a complicated issue where several things are true at once.

The scene where Avon and Stringer were on the roof was proof Stringer was right

Can you guys please check out True Detective Season 1?
