Since y'all kept asking where they are at: When the Sheriff mentioned Wyoming, he was referring to the coroner being away, as in out of state. That, plus people talking about Billings and Great Falls, means they are located in Montana. Thus, the latter is the state in which the movie is supposed to take place. Now, whether said setting was where the film's actual footage was shot or not, I do not know. However, just judging by the surrounding scenery, the whole area — including mountainous terrain and such — certainly appears to me as if it could pass for actually being Montana aka "Big Sky Country". Whereas there were plenty of license plates shown on screen, they didn't seem easy to read. Having personally never seen this film before, I also do not know if Montana is ever explicitly revealed via dialogue. If so, then I have not yet reached that point of the movie at this current juncture of my watch-along.

A bumbling buffoon named Barney as both the local village idiot and doofus deputy for a small-town Sheriff Department . . . Hmm, where have I heard that before? This is of course a rhetorical question, 'cause after all, as the adage goes: if you know, [then] you know. (And in this case, most folks SHOULD know!)

Several other films featuring Joaquin Phoenix for suggested / requested recommendation purposes include the following, few, personal favorites of mine: • "Walk the Line" (2005) – A biopic in which Joaquin was simply stellar in his role as Johnny Cash. He was flanked by Reese Witherspoon, who was equally spectacular while playing the part of his longtime wife and fellow musical artist, June Carter Cash. All of the songs used in the movie were admirably performed by both of the aforementioned actors. This movie plus "Ray" (2004) would make for a perfect weekend double feature on consecutive days or something along those lines. It is another biopic of a similar ilk about the life of Ray Charles, in which Jamie Foxx was also superb in his portrayal of said musician. • "I'm Still Here" (2010) – A mockumentary film, directed by Casey Affleck (younger brother of actor Ben Affleck) and starring Joaquin Phoenix, which explores Phoenix's supposed retirement from acting to become a hip-hop musician. The film was a piece of performance art, with Phoenix remaining in character throughout, blurring the lines between reality and fiction to comment on celebrity culture. • "Irrational Man" (2015) – On a small-town college campus, a tormented philosophy professor (Joaquin Phoenix) in existential crisis first finds the will to live when he enters into a relationship with his student (Emma Stone). Subsequently, he gives his life new purpose by committing a heinously criminal act. However, he reasons that his technically immoral decision essentially will eventually be for a generally greater good overall.

Dan Gershgol

This felt like a Quentin Tarantino movie.
