One of my favorite musicals, the stage version is slightly better, but I remember seeing this in theaters 4 times lol

Kevin Landon

This was 1000% inspired by the office 🤣

Robin

Yayyy! I’m so excited! Thank you!!!

Emily G

Please please check out Chicago (2002) and Moulin Rouge (2001) you won’t regret it! They are fantastic musicals.

David Croft-Ogawa

Yay!! I am so psyched to watch this with you guys! I saw this show with the original cast and again a couple decades later. What you may not know is that this show was the main inspiration for the show, Hamilton. Thank you for continuing your journey with musicals.💚

Mikey

this is SUCH a great musical movie! you're never gonna get the opening song out of your head, I know that's how it was for me LOL

Edgar Gonzalez

Let's go. I haven't seen this in a minute, there are only a few musical movies that I like. I saw this at a friend's house. I didn't know it was a musical then lol

Edgar Gonzalez

Asia & BJ, you guys should also react to the movie "Hairspray" 🎶

MaggiLou152

Several of these actors/actresses reprised their roles from the original broadway cast to play their characters for the move. Taye diggs being one of them. He met his first wife (idina Menzel aka Maureen) while performing on broadway.

Rebecca Karsner

OMG Asia and BJ came through!! I'm going to pretend this is a gift from you to me because it might as well be!! Can't wait to get off of work and watch this!!! ❤️❤️

Robin

Taye Diggs is in the original Broadway show. He’s singing.

Neal Moody

Just because Michael left doesn't mean The Office is over.

RollingAcres47

They already saw the gist of this movie when they watched Team America: World Police. The main character Gary was singing in Lease: The Musical, and he was singing the song "Everyone has AIDS"

Amy Spears

Thank you for this. One of my favorite movies!

Patty Estrada

Me crying along with the Asia because Seasons of Love never fails to make me cry…and synchronized singing? Forget about it 😭.

JL Green

The opening song is my absolute favorite. I remember seeing it in the theater and when at home I sing it out loud!

Snc1891

Idina Menzel who plays Maureen was the original ephaba in Wicked ( you should check out the movies at some point). She is also Elsa in frozen if you have seen it.

Robin

I am having so much fun watching this with you guys! I love this movie! 🍿

Robin

She was also married to Taye Diggs

Charlieeee

the 'no day but today' line was the final push that helped me come out as LGBTQIA+ and the day after i came out i went and got it tattooed on my arm ❤️

Matthew B

Glad you guys enjoyed this. I encourage you to do some reading on the original Broadway production, its impact, and continuing legacy. Two notes: 1) the creator Jonathan Larson died before the show premiered 2) It’s based on Puccini’s opera La Boheme.

Maeve1667

You should watch 'No Day But Today: The Story of RENT', it is about Jonathan Larson (the person that wrote the musical). He and his friends were living through the AIDS epidemic in the 80s and this was his way of remembering and honoring his friends that were dying from the disease. Almost all of the people in the movie (the main characters) were in the original production when the musical first came out, they only replaced the original Mimi and Joanne in the movie. Unfortunately, Jonathan died right before the first preview performance...they talk about doing the performance night without him. It made the meaning of the musical/movie so much more poignant.

Dan Gershgol

Fantastic choice. I saw the original cast in New York summer of 1996. They got most of the key original cast members back for this movie. That includes Taye Diggs.

Amy Spears

Lets hear it for all the RENT HEADS out there!

Nino

Yes she sung frozen

Nino

Pls watch LAST HOLIDAY

Darth Brooks

They have watched the first Wicked on here. Should be in the collections page or you can type it in the search bar.

Snc1891

Thanks, definitely have to watch that

Dan Gershgol

There are two deleted songs that did not make the cut of the movie. You can find them on YouTube. Halloween and Goodbye Love. You should also listen to the entire original cast recording.

Robin

That was lovely to watch with you guys! Now I’m taking my tear stained swollen face to brunch!!

Robin

It’s a great watch!

Amber

Thank you for watching 😭 I've been obsessed with this film since it came out. I'm probably in the minority here, but it's the only musical where I prefer the movie over the stage production... Interesting, because this is almost entirely the original cast. Tracie (Joanne) is a masterclass. Anthony Rapp (Mark) is always brilliant. There's not a bad actor/musician in the bunch. (Yes, Taye Diggs was singing) But Maureen was right... Everyone falls in love with Idina Menzel. What an extraordinary talent! She was also the original Elphaba in Wicked and owned that role so much that I refuse to watch the film. But yes, RENT is such an important cultural milestone and brings so much awareness to real problems like poverty, homelessness, addiction, sexuality, HIV/AIDS, and LOVE. Please also note that this year, 2025, is the first year that the US declined to acknowledge World AIDS Day and funding for prevention and treatment of the disease has been slashed and - in some places - eliminated. This is a disease that has killed more than 44 million people around the world and is still very much present in the world. Talk to people who lived through the epidemic of the 80s. I have friends/mentors who buried a friend every day. The stigma and oppression for those suffering and the ignorance of the disease led to bodies literally being disposed of in dumpsters. So much tragedy and heartbreak. Thanks again for watching ❤️ Happy new year to you both!

Amber

Also, you'd both love Moulin Rouge!

J. Scott Samuel

Yall got me sobbing at the kitchen island trying to cook dinner! 😭😂 my husband came in to make sure I wasn’t hurt! 😬😂 this is a soundtrack that will ALWAYS wreck me- that reprise of I’ll Cover You?! 😭🥹

Kelsey Perez

I think you guys would also enjoy Hairspray and Dreamgirls. I love musicals! Great reaction!

Arjan Pelle

there are some fantastic musical adaptions out there in movies: Hairspray, Little Shop of Horrors, The Phantom of the Opera, Les Miserables, Oliver!, Sound of Music. All great music despite the completely different styles.

Fun facts: "Rent" the movie came out in 2005, while the musical first hit Broadway in 1996. It's very directly based on "La Bohème," a famous opera by Giacamo Puccini from 1896. While the story changes slightly (from tuberculosis to HIV/AIDS; from Paris to NYC), the themes of impoverished artists, love, disease, community, gentrification, etc. remain the same. In French, "La Bohème," literally means "The Bohemian." It's not referring to Boho chic or the actual people from the Bohemia region of the world - it's referring to the lifestyle of artists, writers, musicians, wanderers who live unconventional, free-spirited and often poverty-stricken lives. Puccini wanted to convey that these people live passionately and for the moment, despite living lives of constant struggle and uncertainty. The song "La Vie Boheme" in Rent is a nod to the original opera. There's even a line in it that says "...that doesn't remind us of Musetta's Waltz." That's one of the famous songs in the opera (also known as "Quando me'n vo'").

Katie Davis

Also, yes, Idina Menzel is the voice of Elsa in Frozen and she was the original voice of Elphaba (in "Wicked") on Broadway. She won a Tony Award for this. She also played Maureen in "Rent" when it came to Broadway, and she earned a Tony Award for her performance in Rent, as well.

I got to work on RENT as a stunt guy, and worked with Wilson Heredia (Angel) during the riot scene. Several years later, we worked together again when he played Lancelot on the San Fransisco Playhouses production of CAMELOT, where I was the Fight Choreographer. There were seven sword fights, where Wilson did four of them … one using two swords. He’s such an athletic guy. When Wilson did the Broadway production of RENT, he won the Tony Award. For CAMELOT, he won Best Actor, and I won for Best Fight Choreography. He told me that the award for CAMELOT meant more to him than the Tony. We still keep in touch — Great reaction … Cheers.
