The lesson in the beginning of this episode he was teaching the boy is that you're gonna have to do whatever it takes to take care of your brother and each other. He wanted to make sure he wouldn't just wet it happen.

I’m so glad that you guys caught that Walter now cuts the crust off of the PB&J after he killed crazy eight. Gus is no longer getting product from south of the border so he needs Walt and Jesse to produce. All apart of Gus’ plan. I don’t know if it’s ever been confirmed by the writers but I believe Gus warned Hank about the cousins coming. Keep the reactions coming!

If you notice, a character trait of Walt's is to capture the traits of the people he's killed and it becomes a part of him. I won't spoil anything for anyone who hasn't seen it, "You probably have" but there's more traits than just Krazy-8's.
