Your monthly update is here!

Over here!

(As always, make sure you properly closed the Patreon app/Safari/Chrome (whatever the PDF opens with, including tabs). If it says the file is now in the owner's trash it means you're trying to open the old link. It can take a few tries but you'll be able to read it don't worry!Seems like opening it through your mail -> safari (and note the Patreon app) solves the problem.)---Not the most interesting pages to read, I know; it wasn't very interesting for me to draw either haha. But it's important to create an environment for the main characters (the boy here).

I'll skip over the part with Gaston; it foreshadows a few things that will appear much later. Regarding the scene with the wheelchair... I think the main point is to slowly incorporate the idea that the Boy sees his grandmother aging. He grew up with her, he can't imagine that she too could leave him. In this scene, he rejects the wheelchair as he rejects seeing her age. It will push the Boy to question what is "behind him" and what is "ahead of him." And by 'ahead of him' I mean Tera.

We're not done with that.

I never thought there was so much to say and show in a story (at least mine). The main plot, the characters, their relationship, their environment, the impact of their actions... it's a huge mess, and it's sometimes hard not to forget anything. There's too much in this story. I messed up with a few things, but I hope I'm doing well overall.

I hadn't noticed how this chapter is just a succession of heavy and sad moments for the Boy.

Thank you for your support and passion for this comic!

I'm reading you!! <3

First time leaving a coment and i love your work 💕 i know is a sad chapter but damn!! The grandma is such a fashion icon in this one 🤭

svdester

As always, thank you for your hard work! Can’t wait for the next pages.

Mod.Colette

This installment had me feeling sentimental. I love mr. Gaston and I think he shares a bit in common with the Boy. The boy doesn't handle those changes very well, but I can relate so thoroughly to it. I can't wait to see how this opens more. I wish I could write a more complete thought haha 😄

Mellowcat

„Messed up“… really? Actually, one of the main reasons I am so in love with your work is the fact how well things work out. How well they all click. How wholesome and consistent the story, the progress and the characters are. There are little things, of course, but I see those things as your freedom as the artist and author. The creative head in charge. There is nothing major missing or messed – at all! Sure, you know it best. You recognize what’s “missing” or “messy” – but as a reader I don’t miss a thing. Quite the opposite. With each update and upon each re-reading I recognize new neat details, all the little things that clearly show all the effort and extremely well and thought-through plotting, the evolvement and skill. You’re not just “doing well overall”. It’s way better than that! It makes the difference between a shit day… and not. You tip the scales for me. To me, the update IS interesting. I always enjoy seeing the boy interact with his personal environment – we haven’t seen much of that, since he often simply stumbles from one random situation onto the next – that’s how he first met Tera after all. A “lose cannon”. Getting to know him like that is a joy to watch – even if it’s connected to so much pain. Seeing the last panels… someone with a stroller in the park, and the boy with his grandma in a wheelchair in the same spot – here we are, somehow full circle again. Also: It may be pure coincidence or my mind playing tricks on me... but... look at those pictures of Mr. Gaston and the love of his life... that pose is very familiar... now where have I seen that... ;p

Rima

I have a feeling that granny will pass by the end of the story and that the Uncle and Boy's relationship will strain even more after her passing 😭😭 Now imagine if Uncle saw black death Tera and Boy together 👩‍🦯 (I like chaos)

Mellowcat

Hi Rima : ) I so agree - and imagine Tera witnessing the uncle "raging" on the boy like he did just now... I have a feeling Tera might not take that well...

Rima

Hello! Yeah i bet Tera would make even more trouble for the Uncle just to mess w him 💀 (i doubt he'll actually touch the Uncle directly bc the uncle is still a police officer, a quite high placed one too plus i don't think Boy would take that well even if he doesn't like the uncle)

Mellowcat

That's still something I try to figure... I link Teras reaction to Muta "hurting" the boy and being a real violent threat to the boy to something in Teras past. In my opinion, it's a real trigger for Tera, just like the dark is for the boy. Though I am not entirely sure that Tera wouldn't act in the spur of the moment - back then at the gas station it took effort and physical interaction by the boy to shake Tera out of it... in general I do agree - Black Death would probably know better than to lay a hand on someone with the police. That would be a war of a different kind. Usually. But I wouldn't put it beyond Luc or Tera to act when triggered badly enough. About the relationship between the boy and his uncle... I don't think the boy "doesn't like" his uncle. I just think they are very different and that it is a difficult situation for both of them. When Jo was badmouthing the uncle right after the bank robbery, the boy kind of defended his uncle instead of joining in. Oh well... it never gets boring with those characters : )

Rima

You're right but i fear more of what Uncle would do if he saw Boy with black death Tera (i precise black death because if it's casual Tera I'm pretty sure Uncle won't recognize him) like sending Boy away? Or straight up interrogating him, which wouldn't be a pleasant experience for the Boy. Still, i don't think Luc will let it pass if Tera touched a high ranked(?) police officer just because of a "nobody" like Boy so 😬 unfortunately, no one has those answers except for the author

Mellowcat

: ) That was exactly what was on my mind when I saw that! (I think I might have even commented that) - Not so different after all, and honestly, it all fits in the crazy spectrum and range of "love".

yahboyysam

not to be an asshole, but for a more accurate portrayal of age related mobility degradation, a walker would be next. the point is to keep people as ambulatory as possible for as long as possible! if a person has not been using a mobility device already, a walker would usually come next AND then a wheel chair or mobility scooter. the decline in ambulation is typically a gradual one, in regards to age, HOWEVER a rapid decline is usually indicative of a more serious underlying issue! I'm an EMT, I see a lot of old people- and young people! with limited mobility for a variety of reasons and we- nursing staff, rehab, hospital staff, first responders- try to get people to move under their own power as much as possible. just my two cents.

yahboyysam

crutches are not a walker, maybe it's translation?

Mellowcat

Hi there : ) You're right - from a professional point of view. But maybe it's just the fact that this isn't exactly a professional-aided process and choice, but rather her son trying to make things easier - not just for Anna, but also himself? The Boy's uncle must be under so much stress and pressure... the tough case of Black Death (they just recently burned down another building, robbed a bank, murdered some more people and then there is this huge crime scene in the parking garage...) Also, the uncle lost a huge part of his family, suddenly had to try and parent a traumatized child in witness-protection... and he is living with his mother, a widow, who also lost a huge part of her family- younger people, who "naturally" shouldn't have died before her. On top of that - Anna is becoming more and more immobile and disoriented. Adding to the uncle's trouble, her style of parenting is different from his (for example, she allows the boy to dress in a way his uncle despises and is by far more gentle) and that's just the tip of the iceberg. Maybe the boys uncle decided on his own to call someone, get that wheelchair delivered and make it a bit easier... and faster to get things done. The boy was mentioning how long it takes to get somewhere (to the graveyard) with his granny in tow - because she likes to stop, greet everyone, chat with everyone (the shop-owners for example) ... I don't think there is any mal-intent by the uncle... just him trying to keep control and handle things the best way he's able to. Like Anna... instead of fighting it, walking in on that scene... she's de-escalating it pretty swiftly and clever. Even so the boy can somehow accept it. To me, the main point is the boy's reaction, his perspective and the shown impact the situation has on him and his uncle alike. Jumping from crutches to a wheelchair just prominently highlighting that. That's one of the parts I credit to "artistic freedom" : )

Emily Hoselton

Gods, I relate to the wheelchair so much. My Grandma had to be moved into a nursing home and the house she and my Grandpa built was just sold to some other family. Seeing her bent over a walker and the way her memory is starting to fade is heart-wrenching. And I loved the bit with Mr. Gaston, about how the objects hold his cherished memories. That, too, really resonates with me. That house was my favorite place on earth. I practically grew up there with my brothers over childhood summers. Not being able to go back there is extremely hard to accept.

Mellowcat

Hi Rin : ) Funny, I have some of those songs in my “list” too! Though my mind twists it in a little different way… “Breath of life” for example. To me it’s Teras past and his “becoming”. Freeing himself of his shackles, of the fear that was holding him down, becoming a thrill-seeker, dancing with the devil time and again. Just like Jo. Looking for an exit, but everything in his head says “no”. No. And no perspective. With the line “a little vision of the start and the end” – with that lifestyle you know what you get and how it will probably end. You don’t retire and die of old age peacefully in your sleep. Tera clearly has triggers and a thing for the “devouring rush” – but he was a kid himself, trying to find a way. Things happened (“something in your past”, like the boy already put it). For the boy and their relationship… One major point of the boys’ character seems to be his compassion. Lee just had to mention Tera may be in need of a friend (that big bad bully) and that’s what came to the boys’ mind, when Tera was in his bedroom, having the boys most private fears at his fingertips (in this sketchbook). The boy decided to sit down and talk to Tera… whom he just had hit with a frypan, fully knowing who it is and not confusing him with another stranger intruding his private space. My point is – the boy is very … forgiving. He doesn’t seem to hold grudges and even if his feelings get hurt – he still tries to walk in their shoes (in the bank, Jo was nastily blaming the boy for getting shot). The boy still is considering everybody’s circumstances, Teras’, his uncles, Jo’s – even Mr. Gastons, courting his grandma. The boy tries to help. As lost as he is in his own past… he always tries to help. I think probably because he is lonely and there was no one to help him back then. He still has that same feeling of being lost and maybe also feeling left behind. Like Jo for example, he just had to share little bits and pieces of his life… and I imagine it won’t be much different with Tera. I doubt the boy will see Tera just as an offender… but also a victim alike. Circumstances and all. Things happening that sat the whole wheel turning which is crushing their lives one way or the other. Chasing catharsis. With that said – have an awesome weekend : ) and thx, it’s always fun to exchange thoughts, playlists and theories. Time will tell. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Soso

There is so many interesting elements in your story ! And as you said, there is a lot of sad moments for the boy in this chapter, having to face some of his fears : the things in the dark, face the loss of loved ones sooner or later... It's a chapter emotionally hard for the boy, it's heartbraking to see him so vulnerable, he needs to be comforted. I hope the next pages/chapters will be a lot softer for him ! You're such a good story teller, you make your characters so lovable !

VioletGrass

I worked with the elderly for a long time and I love his uncle’s preparedness but fuck him n his EQ of a fish

Kiko

Are these nightmare creatures memoriesof his dead family? He might saw the corpses and they had the same posture as the creatures, wich he sees the whole time

zpico

Aww Thank you Fernanda! Comments are what's motivate me the most, so it's really appreciated!! <3

zpico

Aw, thank you Svdester, it's really appreciated <3

zpico

Hey Colette! Love your username haha (probably because I'm a huge fan of a French author by the same name). I've think about this update and I think I won't keep the page with Gaston talking about the grandma for Tapas, it doesn't seem very revelant...! Thank you for your comment Colette! <3

zpico

Haha hey Mel! In fact I think I need to stop trying to develop every aspect of the story literally: here, for example, upon reflection, I won't keep the passage where Gaston talks about the boy's grandmother. It doesn't remove that relationship from the comic, but it doesn't need to be 'explained.' It lacks relevance. This way, I can better focus on the main plotlines without diluting the intrigue too much.

zpico

Hey Rima!! Thank you for you comment!! Haha well that's for sure interesting! Not the "I like chaos" lmao-

zpico

Hey Calicotigercat! Don't worry, your is revelant actually! I have a bit of the same feeling; it's part of the things I include when I say I've messed up some storylines. If I can make things a bit clearer (but it's my fault if it's unclear!), the wheelchair isn't actually necessary; the grandmother can still walk perfectly fine. But I wanted to introduce this idea of aging as an impact, something hitting the boy. I needed a strong element, even though the uncle specifies it's not for daily use but rather for support on particularly long or difficult journeys. I would also say it's a way to show how the uncle tries to have control and dominance over the whole family. He imposes this wheelchair. Thank you for your comment; you weren't being an asshole, haha. I consider the Patreon version like a "WIP". Of course I can't change major stuff for the Tapas (final) update, but I can surely delete some pages if I don't think they're revelant enought!

zpico

Hey Emily!! That's an interesting and relevant insight, thanks! I think this passage lacks relevance imo tho; I'm not sure if it will end up on Tapas, we'll see...! But I like what you're saying cause I did want to introduce this idea of aging as an impact, something hitting the Boy, and it's hard to swallow. In the first chapter there are small hints that the Grandma is slowly loosing it, and the Boy just make fun of it. It's changing. Thank you so much for your comment <3

zpico

Hey Soso! Haha actually I think I need to stop trying to develop every aspect of the story and keep it more subtil, to focus on the main plots. There WILL soon be moments of comfort!! Hope you'll find them sweeet and cute and touching- Thank you for your comment Soso!!

zpico

Haha, hey Violet!! I think you got the idea behind that scene yeah! It was a way to show how the uncle tries to have control and dominance over the whole family! So, good point!

zpico

Weeeelllllll, can't say much! Note that there are 4 creatures in total, but the Boy only has Mum, dad and brother-
