Related post : [drawing] Bees (mostly Apidae)

The content of this post is mainly about character placement!

I'm thinking it would have been good to go through Bee's drawing/study process two~three more times. However, due to time constraints, I'll proceed with the painting right away. No one rushes me, but I have a set maximum time limit for each project.

First, I consider how many bees I can draw.

The second step is to consider the colors.

The most common colors associated with "bees" in people's minds are yellow and brown. So, I arranged the colors yellow and brown at the top center.

The numbers below indicate the number of animals in each frame.

I'll be testing on my smartphone based on this.

Most people will be viewing my drawings on their small smartphones.

I like the color thumbnail with 100 bees the best.

I could draw more than 112, but I decided it wouldn't be recognizable on feeds.

In any case, if people see a few large bees in the middle, they'll be able to tell that this is a bee drawing.

I'm improvising and starting by completing the bees I want to draw.

First of all, I completed the Western honey bee.

I also tested how it would look on mobile. Like emojis, it's important that it's recognizable even at small sizes.

The wings were originally more complex, and the fur had more detail, but I simplified this.

The spacing seems too narrow, so it might be a bit scary for some people. I think I'll need to fix this later.

Here are some close-ups of some of the finished Bees.

I drew the antennae to look like teddy bear ears.

The color was so beautiful, I fell in love with it at first sight.

This bee belongs to the Rhathymus genus, and it is said to be quite aggressive towards other bees. That's why I drew it with a slightly rebellious expression 😎

Bumblebee somehow strikes me as a bit of a goofy and kind..

I tried to capture that expression.

Bombus ignitus (호박벌 <- It means pumpkin bee.)

This is a bumblebee that is often seen in East Asia!

Some species of stingless bees produce honey like honey bees, and some people keep them as pets.

Amegilla cingulata, bee that lives in Australia.

I highly recommend seeing the actual photo of Amegilla nubica.

If I were to name the bee, I'd probably call it a panda bee.

In the full drawing of 100 bees that will be completed later, these details will be too small to be seen. So, it might not seem very efficient, but... It's still a meaningful touch for me 😌

I use two canvases this time.

I'm painting on one canvas and then placing the finished bees on the final canvas.

It's like an empty collection book for a game. So It'll be really rewarding to fill out the entire!

Normally, I'd release four updates of 25 animals each, or five updates of 20 animals each, for a final version of 100 animals on Social media. Considering algorithms and such, regular updates are necessary. However, this project won't be concerned with that, and I'll just post it once when it's all complete.

Oh, and of course, Patreon is an exception. I'll post another progress update next week. 😁

Thanks!

omg I love them!! will you be drawing carpenter bees? I love the lil eye on their backs

Michelle Vucko

This is an amazing project! I also didn’t know how many different kinds of bees there are. I love the idea of some people have the stingless bees as pets too 💖

Dee

Those are adorable, and the Amegilla Nubica really does look like a panda bumble bee. xD

pikaole

Yes, of course. I'll plan to include at least two carpenter bees. The Blue Carpenter Bee is one of four bees I will be drawing in large format. (But I think I'll only draw the big eyes and may not the small eyes, so please understand this part. 😂)

pikaole

Yes, besides honey bees, there are quite a few other types of bees that people raise, and they seem to have nice personalities✨

pikaole

Hehehe, you saw the photos! That bee was so cute it almost hurt my heart 😭

whilomm

oh i just love the way you do your colors, a wonderful mix of realism and whimsy. Everything looks adorable so far! and 100... thats so many bees.... godspeed

Dee

We have Mason Bees (more of we put up houses for them so they can nest safely). They are not aggressive and excellent pollinators. 🩷

Ren

I love the expression on the yellow faced bumble bee 🥰😂💛

Avalon Bernd

Bees are the best!! I love them so much. If you ever made a bee collection game I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

Amanda Denny

There's about 20,000 species worldwide!

Amanda Denny

Omg! I hope you do some Megachilidae! They're my absolute favorites!

Bees of War

I already play the Pikaole Bee Collection Game: I buy as much Pikaole bee merch as I can and make sure to never use them 🤣😆😅 🐝🥰🤗

Avalon Bernd

😂😂😂 Goals, honestly!!! Only for me I'm saving up for the ladybugs or poison dart frogs off redbubble

pikaole

Thank you! This is the image I got of bumble bees. I really like them 😚

pikaole

Haha, I have a theory that if I consistently draw 10 a day, I'll finish it in 10 days! I'll work hard 🙌

pikaole

Thank you both 😂 The bees I drew before, the poison dart frog and the ladybug.... These are all pretty old rims from what I remember, but thank you for still liking them!

pikaole

Oh yes, of course. I started my research mainly on Apidae, so they are completed first, but I plan to add sweat bees, leafcutter bees, and other various species. First, I'm thinking of drawing a large version of Wallace's giant bee. Do you have a favorite Megachilidae?

Avalon Bernd

They are SUPER cute with the loveliest colors!

pikaole

Haha, I think the grid gives a sense of stability but also a sense of pressure 😂 I like symmetry and neat alignment, so I use it often when I draw.

Udina

Wow, so many bees! And you took such care with the details.

pikaole

Thanks for catching details 💕 hehe

pikaole

Thank you so much Gwen!

Caitlyn Cook

oh my gosh i just love these so much!!!

pikaole

Thank you so much caitlyn ☺️💕💕
