Recently, a Halloween parade at an amusement park in Seoul(Lotte World) has been a hot topic on Korean social media. I also went to check it out with my nephew and friends a little while ago 😈

The concept was "dark fantasy," and I enjoyed it. I figured someone would have filmed a better video, and there is a 4K version available. If you're interested : Youtube link

The characters in the parade, featuring black-and-white stripes and polka-dot patterns, were both eerie and striking. I wondered what colors I would use if I were to incorporate that kind of vibe into a drawing.

So, I thought about drawing those kinds of animals with a bit of a spooky vibe.

I added a blood-red ribbon as an accent... though now that I've drawn it, it doesn't look particularly spooky—just cute 😅

Polka dots, red, blue, and black.....

These patterns and colors also bring the spotted lanternfly to mind.

Anyone familiar with this insect is likely already getting the spooky...

It is a notorious invasive species that has been causing problems in Korea for about a decade now. To the uninitiated, it might just look like a pretty insect; however, while looking up details to explain it, I discovered that it has now spread to the United States and Canada as well.

Hmm... draw plenty of these insects for the this season, I could successfully create a truly spooky vibe 😂

Other lanternflies(like blue winged lanternfly) —the ones that aren't invasive species—are also incredibly colorful and beautiful. They look like fairies. I think they would be great subjects to draw someday.

Just a random train of thought... there’s a fish with "devil" in its name, you know.

An interesting thing about this fish is that there are five species, and with the exception of one, their names all include the cardinal directions—East, West, South, and North.

I looked up a video after reading a description saying it had a gentle temperament, and I burst out laughing when I saw it just lying. (Shorts Youtube link)

Ghost bird potoo.. and potoo ghost.

Personally, I’ve been really into videos of birds opening their mouths wide lately, so whenever I go on Instagram, the algorithm only shows me videos of big-mouthed birds. and potoo is one of the best... (Another best is the swift. It looks like it has a really small mouth, but it opens incredibly wide—it’s something I never get tired of looking at. These days, whenever I meet up with friends, I often show them videos of swifts.)

Thanks!

Omg spotted lantern flies are my actual horror they torment me whenever I see them, and im in NYC. There were less this year but they are a horror to me lol love your work though 😭🫶🏻

Swifts are my favourite! Potoos are pretty cute, too, but we don't have them where I live.

I love lantern flies and more that your drew them cutely, even though they’re causing chaos over there! Predators have picked up on them around me so they are very short lived. At my old job, they used to all come to me for some reason, I felt bad hurting them and would actually try to save them 😅

The Lolita sea bunny and pyjama squid are too cuteee I hope you draw more haha. I’ve never seen a lantern fly before but it looks like a pokemon

I also love swifts, but my personal favorite 'tiny beak, huge mouth' birds are nightjars.

Your sketch of the sea slug with the ribbon headband is tooooo cute! 🥺 Also, the spotted lanternflies are invasive here and I am supposed to squish them, so I feel bad seeing your cuter version 😆

There's so many rad types of fish with spooky names that match their looks like Skeleton "Shrimp", Ghost Pipefish, all the Ghost Knifefish and Catfish, Chimaera/Ghost "Shark", Vampire "Squid", etc! And mammals, insects and herptiles, too, of course :D Love what you did with the pola dot/striped marine critters, even if they turned out cute, they look gothic, too~ Also, love a good Frogmouth video or watching the Phoebes on my block open their mouths

Yes, that's right! I actually drew some of the animals you mentioned during a past "Spooky Season" 😆 Since you might have missed the ones I drew quite a while ago, I'm leaving a link here.

It’s the same story here, too. 😂 As I mentioned in my post, they’ve been a nuisance in Korea for a decade now. Personally I try to avoid taking a life whenever possible— so don't kill them but I always have mixed feelings whenever I see them.

pikaole

yes yes and they’re all cute, and really love the faces of great-eared nightjars.

pikaole

I’ve always enjoyed drawing ribbons and animals together, so I’ve wanted to keep drawing more in the Lolita style... Lanternflies are quite beautiful—they almost look like butterflies. I’ve never actually seen a species other than the invasive one (I hear they’re found in places like Southeast Asia!), but they can be quite large so yes like a pokmeon.

The birds we see in our own local area feel more familiar, don't they? There are swifts in Korea too, but since I live in the city, I hardly ever see them 😭.

idontlikechocolatebrownies

That's a shame! I live in the city, too, but since we have a lot of old buildings, the swifts come to our city.

pikaole

Oh, I know what you mean; they often come up to people here, too. It’s because they have a tendency to jump. I don't like taking lives either, so I don't kill animals, but the truth is that these creatures have a massive negative impact on other ecosystems—if you read the relevant articles, you'll see just how serious the situation is. It's a good thing there are many predators :) In any case, I believe human influence is the reason those animals migrated, so the animals themselves are not at fault. Plus, they’re beautiful!

pikaole

I totally get what you mean 😂 Personally, I think they’re pretty, and they look cute when you see just one or two... but when the population explodes—like seeing a whole bunch of them clinging to a single tree or covering the ground—it really stirs up a mix of complicated feelings.(Especially when I absolutely have to walk along that road—it’s .... 🤯)

pikaole

It might be because where I live is far from the sea. or I live right in the heart of the city 😭 Even though there’s a huge park close to my home, so I do get to see animals—unlike in other parts of Seoul. 😂

Zöé

Oh my gosh! They're so pretty! Can't believe I didn't dig far enough to see these✨

Zöé

And this one :0 Ah! I'm in love with this Knife Fish!!! Now I really need to dig further into the archives!

BunnyBoo

OMG YES! I love that bird with the ridiculously huge mouth!!

pikaole

🙌🙌🙌 They are super cute when they open the mouth
