I learn most of English through Social media.

When I first heard the word 'smol' or 'birb', I thought it was kind of typo.

I learned English word about animal nickname on Twitter :D

As a non-English-speaking user, I don't understand 100 percent of the nicknames of these animals like native speakers, but when I pronounced them out loud, I could feel something cute😌

sketched some of them..

Emerald green snail, Western Hognose (Albino), Green jumping spider

“Snek” is also sometimes “danger noodle” 😊

Zimpirate

Boop the danger noodle

Jamie Huang

Hahaha I love this! :) I'm actually in the U.S but I'm Korean. I feel the same way about Korean words! I learned my Koream from my grandma so I have a REALLY outdated vocabulary 😂 Some of my words are Japanese cuz she's from that time. There's so many Korean internet language I don't know too!

pikaole

Yes and also Nope rope! right? 🥰

pikaole

Oh! I see! It's really cool to learn words from grandma. Hahaha, Korean internet language are very complex haha. I knew it very well before, but I feel like I'm falling behind as I'm in my 30s😂

I see the comments about snek sometimes being "danger noodles". This is true! "Danger noodles" tend to be venomous snakes. The danger is the venom. If they bite you, it's a hiss kiss. You don't want a hiss kiss. "Nope rope" tends to be snakes that aren't venomous, but perhaps someone might be afraid of snakes. There's also "spicy noodles", for when snakes would very much like to be left alone and let you know about it. (Spicy tends to be a cute way to refer to a small animal that doesn't want to be friends with a human and gets defensive. It can also refer to a cat who is feral) Granted, these are all really cutesy names. Not commonly used outside of the internet and some animal enthusiast circles. Are there any cutesy names like these in Korean?

Frankie Bays

In addition to birb, you might be interested in borb. Borb is like birb, but when the bird is round (like an orb, which is another word for sphere). I recall you did a series on tits, which are very round, so those would be borbs (bird orbs).

And there's also "sky puppies", which is a cute name for bats, since they look kind of like cute dogs. They're really beneficial friends, and eat a lot of mosquitoes in the night, and fruit bats spread fruit seeds. But they're facing a bit of a crisis right now in my country (the United States). There's a condition called white nose syndrome. It's a fungus that grows on the bats faces while they hibernate. Some bats have had their population drop by as much at 90% in some areas, and have been rendered endangered or threatened by the disease. :(

Heidi

aww I love the little snel 😄

pikaole

Oh, I didn't know the difference between them, but your clear explanation made me understand! Yes, of course there is cutesy name in here too :D Most of them are infant languages, which come from their barking sound.

pikaole

Haha I really like round birds, and that makes sense. borbs! There is a similar meme in Korean. we have consonant 'ㅁ' , I use the consonant when I see a square-cut puppy.

Tuptaju

I don't get the snep? And personally I love "sea pancake" for manta ray.

pikaole

I can fee your icon 🥰

pikaole

Yes, bats are so cute! I'll draw a bat someday... Oh no, I've never heard of the disease, it's really sad that it kills many bats 😭I hope they get over it.

pikaole

Haha I heard most of the words for the first time this year😂 sea pancake also cute, But in here, there was a culture of eating rays, so it was a bit subtle food name to them 😂

Tuptaju

Oh no... People eat rays?! D: It's the first time I've heard that...

pikaole

I never eat them in my life... i heard the taste is very strange, so young people don't eat it well, but people who like it like it very much.😅

CaptainMirage

These are all so cute! "Sea flap flap" is a winner 😂

pikaole

I think the pronunciation and meaning are really cute🥰

Charlie Ngo

My theory is that the mispronounciations sound like cute baby babble, similar to how a baby will mispronounce bottle as "baba".

pikaole

Oh, totally make sense! that's the reason they sounds cute 🥰

Charlie Ngo

I'm sure Korean has similar things that sounds cute for the same reason!

pikaole

Haha yes we have too 😂 laungauge are so fun!

Jellywish

Ah the sea flap flap, most majestic being in the sea 😂😂😂 I've always loved these alternative names for animals in English. We don't really have this kind of names in French, except maybe for cats and dogs but it's not really the same 😭

pikaole

Haha we too, Maybe it's because we don't actually see marine life in our daily life...😂

delightfuliza

I personally love "Sea Pancake" for rays, but Sea Flap Flap is really cute! ;WW; My most favorite of these kind of words are Danger Noodle though. Vipers, Cobras, Kraits etc, all precious danger noodles <3 Another one you might not know that I heard of is Sea Puppy/Sea Puppers. That's a seal! I think it's super adorable honestly :'D

Aluvian

I have been calling stingrays 'sea flap flaps' for so long. My mom and sister also call them that too. It feels weird when we say 'stingray' now. 😂

pikaole

Ohhh I didn't heard about sea puppy! The funny thing is, in Korea, seal is 물개, the word means water + dog! 😂It's so cute that animals have food related nicknames.

pikaole

really? 😂It's wonderful for every family to call them by their nicknames! so cute!

Spike Milligan

What about "sea noodles" for eels? 🤔

msabutera

so cute! i've always called snakes 'snek', and also calling snakes 'noodles' is popular too. happy to see you draw a hognose snake, they are my fav and i'm getting one soon! Pupper and doggo are very popular. 'Trash Panda' is probably one of my faves haha. Honestly the 'shork' is new to me! I can see how being a non-native english speaker this must have been SUPER confusing at first haha

pikaole

Oh, it's wonderful that you're going to raise them soon. Hognose is so cute! I love their faces so much... I drew it once before, but I had to draw it again. I was confused at first because these nicknames did not appear in the dictionary, but I am learning more and more :)

Pat B

This is my first time seeing snep, and I love snow leopards so I'm delighted!! Thank you for sharing the fun. :)

pastelcrayfish

I'm a fan of calling snakes "spaghettis". XD

pikaole

Yeah, I learned this word just last week Xd Thanks Pat B!

pikaole

Ohhhh hahah That's fancy noodle! hahaha

Amber-Cakes

Hehehe these names are so cute. Sea flap flap is my favorite.

pikaole

Thanks amber! sea flap flap sounds so cute!

pikaole

Haha, that's right. For example, the apple snail I drew today has a lot of 'snapple' comments. I guess it's a popular drink there. Sometimes it's bad that I can't understand everything, but It's comforting to hear that even you're confused too :D

pikaole

Oh, I remember there was a some kind of convenience store at a gas station when I watched an Hollywood movie. Here I live is similar like Tokyo. There are vending machines and convenience stores everywhere😁

HiccupsCloud

So adorable. I love this one. 😍

Keely Rundle

Went looking for wallpapers to personalize my work computer and wanted to get all of the cute labelled ones so everyone knows how into Marine Biology I am. Now it's only going to be this one.

pikaole

Omg😂💕 Thanks for using this wallpaper for your work computer!
