Like Talizmyn, I’m wondering if there’s a pronunciation issue where emphasis on different syllables changes meaning. It’s not super clear to me how much of the southern language they know. The meaning of Kizara’s name comes up in chapter 1 between Jintu and Rantu (“lovely fire-colored threat”) and again in chapter 3 where she explains to Jintu (“passionate threat”). Was Makzusa their sole source of info or would they have been tutored in languages growing up so they would have had some basics but not the sort of details a native speaker would know? That she was selected by Miidro is not surprising. The man is taking every chance to muck things up.

OH no this is definitely a foreign relations NIGHTMARE. Makzusa already lost her livelihood (and almost lost her tongue) over this, and Miidro's job is now hanging by a thread because he recommended her for the role. HEADS ARE ROLLING. Makzusa's incompetence made Emperor Tuzaal and his entire family look incompetent by association, and nearly derailed the negotiations altogether. The only things holding these negotiations together are Jintu's (glorious) gallantry after the snake bite, and Kizarasunga's gracious response.

Well, the way they're phrasing it, it sounds like the entire royal family is fluent and that the translator wasn't actually for them - and we haven't seen their mother yet. I am, in fact, wondering if they're fluent due to her.
