6/24 EDIT: I saw the specialist today and it's not a tear, it's a retinoschisis! Which means I don't need surgery! I have to check back in with them in a few months for monitoring but I should be fine to keep going on about my business. I can get back into pages yayyyyy

Hey everyone! Sorry for the silence this month, I finished the previous page of TQ and then went into my script books for the script and realized I had never written down the script for this scene at all. It's not that unusual since I often keep this stuff in my head anyway but I needed to make sure I was hitting all the points I wanted to hit and so I started writing out the script while working on the next thumbnail.

And then that led to me falling into a scripting hole where I literally couldn't choose what scenes or even what story I was working on, the scripts were spilling out and I had to catch them as they were falling. I hit this state maybe once or twice a year and I wanted to nervously laugh about it while posting the next page (I am currently cleaning up the sketch to prep for line art) but:

I just got back from the eye doctor and I have a retinal tear. The doctor says it was on my images from last year (not that my previous doctor said anything about it) and it doesn't appear to be getting worse but I've been having a spot in my vision for a few months now directly where this tear is located and I need to see a specialist. I don't have health insurance so my eye doctor is going to ask around to see what my options are. She literally has no idea what surgery would cost me out of pocket if I need it.

Now: Since I've been scripting, which I do by pacing around my living room and writing in a sketchbook instead of being in front of a screen all day, I've been seeing that spot a lot less. Which means it's potentially exacerbated by staring at a screen for too long. Because when it does show up, what am I doing? Looking at a screen.

I'm not going on hiatus here. However I AM just going to continue scripting for a bit and try and work on pages and patreon-exclusive art in short bursts. It will be slow but I promise I'm working on stuff for you guys. I apologize for the inconvenience and I understand if anyone would rather leave and come back later. My vision is at stake and I have no choice but to take it seriously.

Take care of yourself, lady! We'll be here waiting!

I wonder if those blue light glasses would help at all if its the screen that aggravates it 🤔 Take care of your health first! It's more important!

my spouse had a retinal tear a couple of years back, and he's still dealing with the aftereffects. fortunately by now all that means is that he needs to use eye drops a couple of times every day. unfortunately... *handwaves* everything else. >___<

OMG I hope you get better and that the specialist can help. If you need to take a hiatus noone will be mad or disappointed. Tea might help enhance your eyesight in the meantime like Green, chamomile, and eyebright teas. Take care and pace yourself 🙏💖

I'm here because you make wonderful stories and art. But it's the YOU that makes that stuff good, so like everyone else here, I just want you to be safe and happy. <3 <3

hey! i don't know where you're located or what your situation is, but if this is helpful: my father is a retinal surgeon in california, pretty much everything he does is retinal tears/detachments, and he says exam + laser surgery should run between $500-$700 USD, and if you're in the US and have to deal with hospitals here, there are ways to deal with them and ensure they don't overcharge you. he warns that if left untreated, this could develop into a retinal detachment, which is much more serious, is highly likely to lead to permanent vision loss, and surgery to fix that is around $7,000 USD. again, i don't know where you are or what your specific situation is, but i hope this information is helpful to you!! it's scary to be in your situation and i hope you know that anything you do to take care of yourself is The most important choice you can make, regardless of what it means for us fans. we admire you more than the product of your efforts <3

Thanks for the update; take care of yourself!

I'm in Florida and thank you so much for posting this. Just having a ball park estimate makes me feel a lot better and that range for the laser surgery (which is what my doctor said I might need) is something I can manage since I plan for a couple of emergencies every year. I'm definitely not letting it get worse. My eyes are very important to me and I've never taken them for granted because my vision really sucks already.

Deepest hopes and sincerest wishes things can get better for you. Everyone can use some good news, especially when getting news like that.

happy to be of help!! the two most common tear treatments are typically quick procedures, usually no longer than half an hour to finish, so they're not too terribly expensive; if you do get a bill significantly larger than that ballpark, you can always contest it with the hospital, etc etc. it sounds like you're in good hands with your doc and you're on top of it, so we'll send our best wishes! if it helps, there's nothing you'd normally do in your day to day that could worsen it unless you do stuff that requires safety goggles, so if you have to look at screens for work or anything like that, that won't cause any additional harm. but, if it helps in general to rest your eyes and keep away from screens, that's not a bad thing!

Heeeeyyyy so my eye doctor got back to me and told me the only quote she was able to get from nearby specialists was $5000-$8000 and now I'm considering a trip to California

deicidalgod

yikes yikes that's so much?? do you know if she specified that you only have a small tear? i guess i don't know much about florida's policies or resources so i can't really advise on whether that's normal or not. and i don't want to tip the scales in any direction, you should do what's best for you, but hey if you do need a guy in ca i know one lol but hopefully that's a very very last resort and you can get this sorted for significantly less closer to home!!

Lady Manticore

Hooray!!!! 🎉 please still do your best to take care of yourself! Your art and story is worth the wait!

deicidalgod

thank goodness!!!! happy for you <3
