Alright,

That’s the end of Dragon’s Justice. Honestly, this series has continued to be a high performer for me. The last two books saw a sharp decline, but those first three books did something very right and continue to pull in a lot of readers.

I’ve gone back and read them again and I look at my other series often trying to identify what that golden nugget is.

I think I understand a little better and hope to recreate that in future series. Right now I have two other strong series going.

So, it is time to put Dragon's Justice aside. Zach isn’t dead, he or something else in the universe could reappear in the future. But it is a nice time to stop. Most if not all of the threads are tied up. This has been the story of Zach, the human with a little anger in him, becoming Zach, the god, and restoring the dragons.

I almost put a small section in there to say that bahamut and tiamat were made my a big human with blue runes over his body to tie this into the overall universe. Canonically, in my head, Dar created the dragons in the world as he tries to solve an overall universe mana problem. In that mana and physical matter are two sides of a coin and with Pandora sealed away, much matter is being created in the world tree and mana is thinning in the universe.

Anyway, I reread DD 103 and am super excited to get to work on 104 with the terrible decision of splitting the party that the D&D player in me is kicking myself in the pants.

We’ll get into that. The biggest problem there is balancing the Crimson romance plot and making it satisfying, but I’ve been ruminating on that quite a bit. I actually started working on 104 by writing a handful of Crimson perspectives that will be sprinkled throughout the book. So the timeline and overall plot are sort of set on that Crimson story backbone.

It is very different than how I normally write, but I think it'll make sure it doesn't feel like Crimson and Ken were just making a lot of progress only to be ripped away.

Otherwise, a number of things are just churning away in the background.

Many people are asking me about the non-harem series planned to replace Dragon. Never fear, I am not leaving Harem, just as I like to rotate things to keep things fresh, rotating out of genre is an extension of that. I won’t start another non-harem series, keeping 2 out of 3 of my series solidly in harem for the foreseeable future.

There will be romance, but it is unlikely to be as ‘clean’ as harem romance. Hopefully the series is long enough for him to have some love and lose some love. Only to find it again.

Blades of Austeria (Series name) starts with a street urchin MC, but we’ll do some forward skips to get him aged up, but I have a opening to the story that I’m set on.

In my head, it is Night Angel from Brent Weeks, mixed with One Piece while flipping the script in the genre a little. The primary villains for the series will be the Isekai, framed as invasive species in Lito’s world. Multiple heroes and demon lords popping up creating wars and the normal people as Lito begins as, getting caught up in it all.

It’ll be LitRPG coated Cultivation and Lito will be a light based assassin/duelist.

Otherwise, I’m in talks with Jessica Threet, Jack Douglas and Actors Everywhere to get Jack and Jessica back for Ard’s oath and possibly get them on a 1 booking a month cycle. There are some contract terms between them and Actors Everywhere that need resolving, but I’m hopeful that I can get them back.

There were some hickups in getting started on the webcomic, but we’ve ironed them out and I’m starting to get a steady pace of character sketches. Once we have some finals there, I’ll get to test out colorists.

We’ll start making chapters/episodes before the end of the year, but to do a 10 chapter debut and have 4 in the pocket will mean we won’t launch until next April/May.

Otherwise, I’m continuing with 104. A little over halfway, a little behind my normal pace, but I am heads down working this week and next to get it done. Ard’s Oath is planned for thicker books and I’m braced for a lot of work to get it done in a month again.

I am also prepping a series of posts that are writing related. ‘Bruce’s Writing Toolbox’. I plan to share it with the community at large in an attempt to help Haremlit and indie authors in general.

Super excited to see how everything goes! DJ was how I found you and easily one of my favorite stories. It's a good place to end though. Looking forward to Ard and Ken stories continuing

Aldrin

I definitely prefer Jack and Jessica's narration. I'd even buy the first dungeon book again as I dislike Lewis and Rozelyn narration

Jim Payne

Agreed, I just feel like Lewis doesn’t have the range? Idk. Ken feels like a middle age stock broker…

Jim Payne

DD and Ard are the two I’m looking forward to the most right now. I’d definitely pay again for the DD101 audiobook if Jessica did the recordings.

Bruce_Sentar

Dungeon 101 has received a lot of feedback for that narration. That is potentially in scope depending on what I can get scheduling wise out of Jess and Jack.

Not sure how I'll like a non harem. but we will see how it goes.

"There will be romance, but it is unlikely to be as ‘clean’ as harem romance. Hopefully the series is long enough for him to have some love and lose some love. Only to find it again." I love this idea. I love the romance and multiple partner aspects of Harem Romance. But, I do not, necessarily, love Harem. I'd love to see some sort of polyamory. I think this is a fascinating thing to explore. I would also love to see a romance where it is multiple partners over time as the MC learns how to tell the difference between falling in lust and falling in love. Or just growing as a person going from hookups to real relationships to a fully healthy real relationsip. I'm so glad you are branching out.

It felt as if the plot of the first two or three books was something that came up at near the end of the series, you would have mashed them into one book.

Kidzero Kor

I actually was writing a story about an NPC living in a persistent sci-fi mmo. it opened with him finding his cargo haul was ruined because players blew up the station he was commissioned to deliver to.

Jericho Knight

Still sad to see it go. DJ was the first book of yours I found, before losing the series and re finding it.

Stormking

It is sad to see DJ end but everything must come to a close. I think the part that really set the decline in interest for me at least was the introduction of the nymphs in book six I am not really a fan of the women in this genre solely existing for having kids and honestly the focus on zach having a ton of kids and his animalistic aspects being so prominent were my two least favorite parts of the series. As for DD narraration I think I would prefer Jessica to take over but as long as the current narrarators improve their work in book 2 i would be fine with that. And a non harem series I don't know if I would read that i do perfer stories with at least two or three love interests and usually when I do read non harem stories I do tend to drop them much quicker.

ArbabSB

I have to agree. The dragonettes already struggled to get focus like the main harem members, and the nymphs are worse in that regard. The bloat of the nymphs being added as more baby factories just diluted Zach's relationships and made his entire existence in the epilogue a struggle to avoid being seen as a neglectful father. And they take focus away from the women we actually are invested in. I wanted to see Zach interact with, for example, Helena and their kid, not with Cinnamon the random nymph and his kid with her for 2 sentences. Even among Zach's personal nymphs, the problem persists. Pixie by herself is a great addition to the Plushies but the others were unnecessary (Nyske is a special case). Even Zach's winter nymph Fiona gets totally forgotten.

Stormking

Yeah Nyske is the only one who actually had something interesting about her I liked that he had the rule of every girl in his harem actually needing to be romantically involved but all the nymphs were just like you said baby factories even pixie I only ever remember because she for some reason got a cover on a book.

Loukemia

I have to wonder about the clean romance comment. The non-harem aspect of the story is not a problem for me, but I don't want a will they/won't they on again/off again romance. Relationship troubles are fine but constantly breaking up/getting back together is frustrating to read.

Jason Constant

Are you set on Jack and Jess as your preferred narrator team or are you open to other options? There's so many good pairings out there and a few up and comers. My top 3 would be: Jonathan Waters/Ellory Lane , Wayne Kelly/Raya Kane, Gabriel Michael/Melanie Hastings, and as a wild card Autumn Ivy/Andrew Blast.

Bruce_Sentar

To keep things moving, I prefer to keep to a smaller number of narrators.

Daniel Sifrit

I can help with the issues in the second half of the series - the first half of the story was set in a local area with standard urban fantasy themes. Even the first fae trip was still a "local" gate with a history. Then once Z was outed it turned international/interdimensional and became more of a rolling battle than a harem story. Cast of characters became huge so far less time on older characters because screen time was needed to establish the new ones. You can probably assume that if the last two fell off that it was really the last 3-4. Some people want the smaller more intimate stories and less of the grand epic battles. Basically scaling issues, in the beginning the whole cast was going to the same SCHOOL. All those are fairly specific in who wants to read them. Honestly I prefer smaller casts myself.

Clifford Wilson

Just a thought... If you decide to do more with Dragons Justice in the future, which you should, do singular books OR a book of short stories and have the kids as the primary characters. As an example, Have the Council call upon the son of Helena and the daughter of Pixie to team up together to investigate a paranormal occurrence. Or several of the kids (Mainly just having a team up dynamic with the kids) randomly assigned together for a mission. It can be a serious mission for the older kids or if you want a humorous tale a "tongue in cheek" type of mission with several of the teenage or younger kids, It could be a mission or a quest. The sky is the limit on these types of spin off stories. Give the book an appropriate title and call it "A Dragons Justice Story".

Six_0f_Dragons

I think it could be interesting if you decide to not bring up Des or Charlotte until Ken sees them again and we’re along with Ken when it comes to figuring out what changed and using this DD104 to just focus on Crimson and the Elves

vonWolfehaus

Speaking of writing, Bruce, do you use any special software to help organize your thoughts as you write?

Eric Bailey

Not going to lie, but I truly wish you had Jessica threet handle the voices for dungeon diving but it is what it is. If she can do the Ard series that would be awesome.

Eric Bailey

Yeesss! This please 100% would buy the audio all over again! Jessica is one of the best out there!

Jason Constant

I hear that. I think of it like hedging bets. We've seen a number of authors have their narrators become so popular that audio releases start taking longer and longer to catch up. So it comes down to consistency vs not putting all your eggs in one basket.

Awesomesauce Inc

The big draw for me with DJ was the early books was discovering himself. The mystery of it and then hiding it. Interacting with the world while trying to keep his nature hidden from both the human world and para world. And I think grounding in a real world like theme helped too.

Iron Akela

You’ve hit the nail on the head there! I all but lost interest in DJ around book 6 or 7, to the point I stopped reading the Patreon chapters. I’ll read DJ9 at some point, maybe the audiobook as I’m less inclined to skim/skip with those. For me, once EVERYTHING revolved around Zach, and the scope became ‘save tue world/universe!!’ every book, o slowly lost interest. Once the harem expanded, the relationships I cared about weren’t ’on screen’ as much, and I tuned out. Plus, and this is perhaps my biggest issue with the later books, Zach kind of became a musclebrained moron. Often I’d ask why he’d done X or Y, as opposed to thinking things through some, he’d charge off cos he was a dragon. He didn’t learn his magic, and the ‘smart cautious doctor aspirant’ became… a pseudo macho adrenaline junkie. Least that’s how I see it

Iron Akela

I’ve not read DJ9 yet… and I’m kinda scared to now :o) I’ve struggled with 7 and 8, so I’ll wait for the audiobook as it’s easier to wade through those than struggle with reading through. My issues with the series are basically harem bloat, scope bloat, and Zach’s regression and inability to learn (especially from mistakes). Looking forward to more DD! Keen to see what happens while the party is split, and then once they rejoin and continue. It’s probably my favourite series right now! Audio for DD, for me it’s just that one word! If it were changed to be the proper pronunciation it would solve all the issues I have with the series personally - I actually like the vast majority of the performances and think it’s well done, and I’m also wary of eggs and baskets :o) Ard is great! I really like him, and I’m keen to see more of that world and where his journey takes him!
