Will you be finishing squid game?

There are people who view the end of this film as positive and triumphant. These people confuse and terrify me in equal measure.

Ok so.... to clear things up.... no Ash this is just not inspirational. The look on Andrew's fathers face was not him being proud, it was horror. Yeah, Andrew got his big moment, and Fletcher helped because this was his opportunity to get his own Charlie Parker. The reason this worked was because both Fletcher and Nieman are obsessed with their goals. It's not passion. It's obsession, which is much more dangerous. Like, the world isn't run like a 60s military boot camp anymore, nor should it be. Psychologically abusing your students to literal suicide is not a sign of someone being discouraged. It's the same thing that will happen to Nieman. The director of the movie said it in an interview, "Andrew is gonna die drunk, full of heroin in his early 30s, just like Charlie Parker." The line is all the way before this. If you think you need to be abused like that to achieve greatness, then you gotta rethink life cause that's all wrong. You can push yourself hard without doing that. Besides, if you break yourself to achieve greatness, you're not even gonna enjoy it. It's a sign that sometimes it's not about the passion. It's the obsession with being great, being praised, having that moment of pure dopamine and feeling on top of the world, being remembered. Of course it's your choice to make if you want to do that to yourself, but you'll find yourself coming back to your humanity like Nieman did. We all crave belonging and connection. That's normal. Wanting greatness is a dangerous thing because if you throw away things in your life that are actually healthy for you, you're not gonna live your life happy. And that should be the ultimate goal, shouldn't it? But I do understand the desire for greatness. But this way of teaching is NOT the right way. You can be tough without literally driving someone to their own death. Gordon Ramsey is a great example. He is harsh, but not personal. You dont ever need to go there. But Fletcher is a bit of a sadistic psychopath and his greatness is living vicariously through his students. Thats fucked up. The end was Nieman falling into Fletchers cycle of abuse. Fletcher got his Charlie Parker. And now Niemans life is fucked because of it. Again, you can achieve greatness without subjecting yourself to that. That's just wrong, there's no way of excusing that. But my god this movie is still fantastic. It was only filmed in 14 days total, and J.K. Simmons won an Oscar for this. Well deserved 👏

The reason you find this so emotional despite it just being about music is because you're witnessing psychological abuse. You're not seeing someone being pushed to be their best, you're watching someone be psychologically broken to disregard their own health and happiness for someone else's dream. And you admired a man who manipulates others to get his own way. Great movie, and a thought provoking ending that's questioning how far is too far to achieve success, and is it really success at all if you've sacrificed your own happiness, relationships and self worth just to please the person who's manipulating you.

What is the cost of greatness? That's the thesis of this film. The last shot of the father watching on is a shot of a man witnessing the death of his son and his rebirth as a monster, as the monster who made him so smiles at his victory. What is the cost of greatness? What is the value of greatness? What a fucking film. You two should watch "Birdman or (the Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)" for an another absolute banger from 2014.

Not surprised this and Sicario entered your top 10 two of my favorites. Million Dollar Baby is next to enter and my personal favorite

2026-09-16 05:00 I'm totally with you Ash, I understand people will have their own say and their own opinions on the message of the movie and what it ultimately means. In this world where everything must be politically correct and acceptable I really think people don't understand that ultimately the price for greatness can come hand in hand with suffering and even abuse if it's the cost for it. It's impossible for many people to get the underlying benefit of having someone break you down in pieces and build you back up to a version of yourself that wouldn't exist otherwise. Most people don't have the stomach for that and would rather just keep to saying, it's abuse you can't do that...It is a glorious ending- because it confronts you to the reality that no matter how hard the road, this is where you end up- at the best of the best, this is where sacrifice pays off. Not in being comfortable and having someone tap your shoulder telling you how ok you are, but trying to push someone further than they ever think possible for them to achieve things they never thought they were capable of

This is also one of my personal favourites as well. I would really appreciate if you guys reacted to older films, like those from the 80's, 70's and maybe even those before that. Also, you would really make my day if you reacted to some of the movies starring my favourite actor of all time, Al Pacino. My number one suggestion would be Dog Day Afternoon. Scent of a Woman would make for a great reaction as well. Thanks.

You should check out Split. It’s a thriller/horror movie. It’s a great movie.

Ash mate, you talk all the time about how the movies that come out nowadays are so dead but take this film as an example, it's 8 years old absolutely sensational and you were completely unfamiliar with it. The 2010s were a phenomenal decade for film you are just looking in the wrong places My G.

Darrius Coopwood

watched the YouTube version and I had to subscribe, this is one of my favorite movies, as an artist im really hard on myself, constantly pushing to paint or draw something better than what I did before. JK Simmons reminds me of teachers I had back in the 90's and 2000's. They were just like this, zero tolerance for bullshit and laziness.

This is the reaction that made me finally join the Patreon.
