Oh Sam, listening to your comments I just know you are going to get so much hate directed your way. Fans are so protective of Scott and Kip and expect everyone to fall in love with them instantly. Episode 3 is my least favourite episode and I often skip it with reactors. I do think this episode only touches on the surface of these characters and that's why I don't feel emotionally connected to them. For context, the TV show is based on a series of six books, with a seventh currently being written (I haven't read any of them). The first book Game Changers is Scott and Kip's story and the second book Heated Rivalry is about Shane and Ilya. I think having a whole book condensed into one episode doesn't allow enough character development for me to really care about them like I do Shane and Ilya. I'm not going to say much about you thinking Scott should just come out because someone else in the comments is sure to let you know how difficult that would be, but if he did his whole world would change (friends, teammates, fans, his career, his source of income etc). I can't wait to see your reactions to the rest of the season, Episodes 4,5, and 6 are by far the best. Will you be putting full reactions on Patreon or just edited versions? I would definitely prefer your full reactions.

Sam Ham

Hi Michelle! Ya thanks for saying that, I was definitely nervous hitting publish. All full reactions will be here, ep2 will be on today, maybe ep3 too if I can. And then a 24hr pre release before youtube for edited vids from now on. Thanks ao much for subscribing!

Sam

I much prefer a full reaction and I think looked for a full one from you too soon. I’ll wait for the full for ep 3

Episode 3 has a very divided reaction from viewers. I, personally, really love it, but lots of people think it is the weakest episode. I'm a 71yo queer man (out since I was 20) and for me this episode shows a very realistic depiction of many men I've known over the years. Scott and Kip are so mature emotionally and can communicate so well with each other (unlike Shane and Ilya) yet they cannot be together because of Scott's fear and societal demands. I am not mad at you for your authentic reaction (in fact I very much appreciate it). It seems to me that gay/queer people really connect with this episode because we've been through this and have seen this many times with others. Our experiences coming out (or not) is very central to our existence. For me this episode does an amazing job developing Scott and Kip's characters through minute and nuanced details non-queer folks may miss. For example, when Kip hugs and comforts Scott after his apology for the incident at the art gallery--the look on Scott's face is devastating. Enough of my yapping. You are to be commended for you reaction. I am excited to watch as you discover episodes4-6. I, also, would prefer your full unedited versions. Thanks again--you're amazing!

Thanks Michelle for your comments, I always appreciate your thoughts.

Oh! I can't seem to find you Ep.2 reaction--am I missing something?

Sam Ham

Hi ned! Not missing anything. Editing the ep 2 full watchalong currently. And will be uploaded today

Michelle West

Hi Ned. Thanks for the nice words. I think I'm going to get addicted to your praise 😊.

Sam Ham

Oh thanks ned! Ya unfortunately theres definitely cultures and experiences that i just simply wont be ale to to understand as much. Im thinking at the start of ep4 to speak a bit about lgbt in ireland and in sport, specifically hurling, because we've had gay people out for the last 20 years. Also unedited (minimally edited) will all be coming here

I have said it before and I'll say it again: trust the process. I had the same questions you did, and you'll get answers eventually. Can't wait for your full reactions!

ned flinn

not a problem--Thanks Man.

Sam Ham

Hi there! Thanks for subscribing! I will 100% trust the process and yep full watchalongs coming asap!

I think it's fine for you to feel ambivalent to Scott and Kip's relationship...but you are also super perceptive with this show. And you're right, one aspect is to contrast against Ilya and Shane's situationship, see how others in hockey navigate being gay. Scott is around 40 and Kip is 25 or 26 years old. Both have more life experience than Shane and Ilya, so their approach to getting together is more solid, mature. They know themselves, whereas S and I are very young and don't truly know their own selves yet. Discovering it together. Again, you are so perceptive in reading into the acting, and glad you'll pay attention to all the other elements in this show. Also, I believe in the books Scott and Kip's relationship takes place over a period of about 6 months, whereas in the show it's a longer time frame.

Sam Ham

Thank you so much Jaye! And thanks for subscribing! :) Its definitely interesting and even as I was editing it I started to feel more towards Scott and empathise with his situation better, but thats the nature of a live blind reaction I guess haha

I'm so happy for you that you have lived a life that makes Scott's position here seem unimaginable. The level of stress and fear that he lives with every day is debilitating, especially with no support network to lean on, and I'm glad that you haven't had to go through that. You are in the enviable position of being able to say "fuck you, this is me" and know in your heart that things will work out for you. Scott doesn't have that luxury. From Scott's perspective: at this point, if he came out, he would lose literally everything. The St Thomas foundation would distance itself from him. The hockey league would push him out, either by putting him on waivers, making his life hell until he quit, or just letting his contract run out and not renewing it. North American professional sports are still to this day hyper-masculine and not at all gay-friendly, and Scott, at this stage in his career, does not have the clout needed to survive being outed. Sure, he's the captain of his team, but he hasn't been playing particularly well. Coming out would be another strike against him, and it would probably be the last straw. He would lose all the brotherly camaraderie he has with his teammates. He'd be a pariah in the organisation, so he wouldn't be able to pivot to coaching within the league. The best he'd be able to hope for would be coaching a junior team or something. Bear in mind, hockey is all he's ever done. It's not like he has other marketable skills to fall back on – he would have to start from scratch with zero support. So for him, the idea of saying "fuck you, this is me" feels akin to threatening to drop an anvil on his own head. He's the only one who really stands to lose anything, and what he stands to lose is everything. Coming out would be world-ending for him at this point. And sure, he's maybe overcompensating with his reluctance to even be seen as Kip's friend, but it's coming from a place of absolute, immobilising, and VERY well-founded fear. As regards Scott's age: it's a little ambiguous. In the books, he's canonically three years older than Shane & Ilya, so he would be in his mid 20s here. The show, however, messed with the timeline of Scott & Kip's story a little, with regards to what year things take place. They also have Scott in Episode 1 referring to himself as an "old fuck" at the awards event in Shane's rookie year, which suggests he's older than his early 20s at that point. Aaand they cast Francois Arnaud, who turned 40 during the filming of season 1, so. I'm inclined to believe Scott is in his early-mid 30s here.

I think you are right about Scott's situation. Even in the 'best' case scenario only some of his teammates, coaches and owners would accept his being gay. To this day, I believe, only one retired NHL player and one minor league hockey player have come out. When the NHL tried to promote Pride events few players participated. Thanks for your comment.
