no major damage done thankfully! :)

Sam can't hear the show... You are fine.

Louis is supporting this lifestyle. Not much a person of color could do to earn a living in New Orleans except manual labor. It's the 19teens, and Louis is ultimately a pimp. Don't write Paul out of the picture...

Can't hear the show Sam...volume of it is barely audible.

I'm happy you will be reacting to this. You will appreciate the quality of the production in addition to the fine acting and beautiful writing in the script. No point in trying to predict what will happen. Anne Rice is a master story-teller (as are the writers on this show) and I am happy to let them unfold the story how and when they intend. This means there will be things we don't know yet, which is intended. As Louise says, "Let the tale seduce you." There is amazing music for you in this series. As you saw already, you'll appreciate some great acting, and wonderful characters and character arcs. I know I will love to hear your thoughts on those aspects of the show as we go forward. For me personally, the least interesting thing I hear from a reactor is predictions on what will happen next -- because the reactor is drifting focus on something useless (after all, what is the value in that?) instead of reacting to what they just saw and felt, which is alway interesting from thoughtful and smart reactors which you have shown yourself to be. I hope you enjoy the series.

I have read all the Anne Rice books, so I know this story well; however, this series does not follow the books exactly. Liberties are taken. Side note: Anne Rice wrote these stories after the tragic death of he beautiful young daughter to leukemia. Writing Lestat helped her move through her grief. She saw the vampiric blood as a type of virus, much like leukemia. Anne also wrestled with her own views of her Catholic faith throughout the series of books. New Orleans was her home, but I believe she wrote Interview with the Vampire in San Francisco.

I couldn't really hear the show even when i cranked my volume all the way. Paul was mentally ill and thought God was speaking to him through birds. He killed himself. The first and second season are based on the first book Interview With The Vampire. They changed Louis from the book. Louis was a white plantation owner who had slaves when he and Lestat met.

Sam's running commentary and analysis is as entertaining as ever. Looking forward to more episodes. (I was able to hear the show audio well enough through my headphones. A little faint, but perfectly understandable.)

You asked about the pinning of money on the bride (at Louie's sister's wedding).... I honestly thought it was just a Mexican tradition, but apparently not. My family called it "The Dollar Dance". Where wedding guests can offer up and pin money to the bride and/or groom for an opportunity to briefly dance with them (dancing less minute per person). It was a fun part of my wedding reception, that I highly recommend. The guests can offer up any amount of money, from a single dollar, $5, $10, $20, hell my grandparents and few of my Aunts and Uncles pinned $100 bills on me and my husband (now ex lol) for a dance. Its an opportunity for the guests to offer up a little "financial start" to the couple, and most would offer up verbal well wishes while dancing too of course. You can rack up a good amount of money from it.... It certainly helped that my mom has a huge damn family, with her 11 living brother's and sisters at the time.lolol And that was just her siblings 🤣🤣 Its a really fun tradition that I would def recommend considering to anyone planning a wedding 👍🏻

So glad you’re reacting to this. The writing, the acting, and the production quality are top notch. Hope you like it! Season 1 is great, and Season 2 is some of the best television I’ve ever seen. The series is based on Anne Rice’s novels, and some of the tv script pulls directly from her prose, so the dialogue often has a rich, ornate, high-drama feel, but it suits the show’s tone in my opinion. It can be helpful to have subtitles on to catch some of the nuances of the old-timey vocabulary (but if you use them, remember to turn them *off* for Season 1 finale— there’s a spoiler in the subtitles for that episode). Oh and just a quick side note, it’s “Interview with THE Vampire,” not *A* vampire (often referred to online as IWTV). Not trying to nitpick, just want to make sure people can find your reaction if they’re searching! :)

One of my absolute favorite shows of all time! You're in for a ride. 16:02 The opportunities for Black people in America in the early 1900s were extremely limited. Especially to keep his family at the same level of wealth they had previously maintained before his father died. Louis' family is one of the wealthier Black families because of their mixed heritage, one of his great grandfathers was a slave-owner and the plantation money was passed down until, as Louis told Lestat, his father almost lost it all. Louis had to hustle hard to maintain his family. The south in this time was heavily segregated and the black population heavily oppressed. The only real other opportunities for black men were agricultural jobs and manual labor. In addition to being a pimp, Louis is essentially a landlord and very business savvy. So yes I would argue that in this context he didn't have much choice. Obviously being a pimp isn't good, but it's not a black and white situation. 33:42 The ground was wet lol 48:19 The dollars pinned on Grace is a tradition is multiple cultures. . Symbolizes wealth and good fortune, is a way to start the newlyweds off with some money and also can be a way of securing a dance. But in New Orleans, it has its roots in traditions carried over from West Africa though the enslaved just like many other traditions in Black culture. Some traditions are completely original though like the jumping of the broom that Grace and Levi also did to finish off the ceremony; it was a way for slaves to symbolize marriage as it wasn't legal for them at the time. Many Black people still do it to this day!

hahah thats so cool! thanks for sharing that about your own wedding too! Can I ask, is that the only money that guests are meant to give? I think here in ireland we give cash in an envelope and it could be 100 to 200 euro

Sam Ham

Thanks for flagginfg the audio issue Steven! Oh right he killed himself, poor guy! so he was a bit cuckoo then i guess

Most guests gift money in an envelope as well, or at least most of our guests did. It was mostly money we received in place of the gifts we registered for..... like 70%, which we def preferred. So with the envelopes of money and the dollar dance money, you can make some decent cash at your wedding lol. Which was so welcome after all the money spent having the damn wedding. My parents are small business owners, so were never very wealthy. Which meant we had to put in money ourselves to have the wedding we wanted. Nothing super fancy, but weddings are so damn expensive that the $10,000 my folks gave us wasn't near enough to cover it.... and that was back in 2002! Can't imagine what it'd cost to get married these days, NO THNK U!lol

If possible increase the baseline volumes, I can hear you pretty well but only if on 100% volume, the show is quieter. I also chuckled… if you pay attention to subtext nearly all vampire stories are queer coded but yes, this one is queerer than typical. .

Spoiler comment re Paul.
