Reminds me of an "Excalibur" comic from way back - Marvel during late Copper Age, had Captain Britain, Shadowcat, Phoenix, Nightcrawler and a bunch of weird aliens. They had a daily thing where the aliens battled each other for an hour then went to business. One of the Mutant Humans asked "Uh, is this some form of cultural ritual across various civilizations?" - Aliens "No, we like hitting each other due to unacceptable cultural elements we are forced to endure as part of our collective."

hold up, there was a copper age of comics? I've heard of gold, silver, & bronze age, but not copper

The copper age is the Bronze Age after the Direct Market boom which was a boom/bubble but happened before the Comic Boom of the 1990s. It was sarcastically called the "Mylar Age" during its time but the 90s era (88 to 93) bubble and larger boom (88-00) era took that title from it. The Copper Age most put with "Secret Wars" and "Crisis on Infinite Earths" - the first iterations of course. Many illustrate it with Spider-Man's Black costume that became Venom as the very start of it. It's known for maturing the neat stuff founded in the Bronze Age from the 70s to the mid 1980s and carrying on those stories. They also tried to mature them a bit more, dealing with entrenched sexism but also tokenism of the past. Some highlights are Claremont's influence on X-Men and Avengers, such as when he had Carol Danvers - the original Captain Marvel - give a huge verbal beating for sending her to Limbo with Immortus as his Oedipal "Bride" ... I mean they didn't "Kill her off" but ... Warning, Millenials and younger sometimes cringe into balls of weeping whining for Teletubbies and juice boxes looking up that story... It also had many artists and writers now legendary cutting their teeth, improving their styles, such as Frank Miller's run on Daredevil, Mignola getting heavy with Inks and REH characters, Stenkewitz getting expressionist...etc. The undercurrent was the early direct market - think original TMNT, First Comics, Aircel comics - things like Grimjack, Warriors/Adventurers, Miami Mice, The Tick, Cerebus. Lots of popular scifi/fantasy novelists listened to comic artists and small indie companies and lots of the best Elric adapations happened here under P. Craig Russel. This undercurrent also affected the mainstream. The Bronze Age had seriously weakend the Comics Code but the old racket still remained and they were strict in their remaining niche. So the mainstream artists had more stability and (gasp!) an actual good salary ... (Bronze age ones sometimes lived in their offices....) but at the cost of working on tired old characters, always a monthly new plot, huge lists of what they couldn't do but pressure to be edgy, cool and 'modern' again... Sometimes companies were able to ignore it with "Suggested for Mature Readers" and NO seal - like Alan Moore's gory, scary run on the Swamp Thing...and yes I saw these on newsstands not just specialty shops. Yes I got "A halo of flies" in a convienience store... Another aspect is things like Star Wars, Rom, Micronauts. Lots of long term holdouts matured and finished here. Star Wars kept the flame alive through Empire and into Return of the Jedi - including a few years after with Luke founding the Jedi school again... Then they stopped it and later Dark Horse picked it up creating the "Expanded Universe" we know well but lots in EU were ported from Marvel. Micronauts was a brilliant "the show MUST go on" like ROM Spaceknight. They got a franchise but the toy line died and the artists weren't sure IF they'd have another job if they told and it got cancelled so they just did their best... Even a lot of their other short-lived kooky franchise things are remembered today for various reasons, Sledgehammer, Inhumanoids, Crystar... Finally, Conan and Kull kept slaying, wenching and the latter more brooding... Sorry for the long essay - one of my projects is some kind of outline of this that can be expanded kind of like "Organic History of Science Fiction" an art piece that got viral... A flow of comic book eras and important moments through the decades. Right now I put us in a "Modern Audience"/"Panderverse" of hyper political correctness and outsider interference combined with corporate gatekeeping. I'm 10x more sour than the people who called the Copper age the "Mylar" age way back when I was a kid and these were all new and cool...
