Clarke's 3rd law of technology in action! That's also the "Magic" behind Dungeons and Dragons which was taken openly from Jack Vance - it's not really the middle ages that never was nor some fantasy other universe - it's the far, far future and just due to time cycles resembles a bit of either. "Magic" is real, the legacy of brief periods of Level 4 technology when the space/time fabric got played with to add new "Forces". Yes that's also a giant scifi franchise - its a decadent level 4 technology that pretends to be a failing level 3 aspirant civilization but their "Force" is artificial and they seem to have a self-replicating tech with a lot of potential but some limitations... But the "Spells" the Magic Users use in D&D are just formulae to manipulate reality using these forces and few if any have any idea what they are really doing...
