Colin and Brad Rank the Consoles (and Final Fantasy Games) | Sacred Symbols+, Episode 399

With an eye towards levity and distraction, we deliver to you a nearly three hour-long episode of me (Colin) and Brad nerding out and talking shop. Earlier this week, I typed a simple inquiry into our staff Discord: What should we do this week for +? Brad had a logical answer: Why don't we rate stuff? So we did just that, first going through the many gaming consoles and handhelds prevalent during the history of our industry, before we segue into a postscript ranking of the core Final Fantasy games. Do you enjoy tons of extemporaneous chatter and constructing arbitrary lists? Then this episode is most certainly for you.

You made good cases for your console list, even if I disagree with a few of them. The biggest miss for me is keeping Xbox 360 out of the GOAT tier. It basically perfected and codified the online experience we now treat as standard today. Outside of the PC, I dare say it has the best suite of online multiplayer games of any platform ever? Combined with a GREAT catalog of games, both exclusive and the superior versions of multiplatforms, and the baseline for the best controller design in the industry to this day.

Curious, does anybody else remember how faulty the TV tuner was for the Game Gear? The antennas were cute but the picture quality was the definition of questionable. 😆

Absolutely loved this episode. I know some people on YouTube don’t like tier list videos. But I could listen to Colin and Brad talk about this for days. Listening to them talk through the history of console gaming and final fantasy was so fun. I hope they do more tier list with similar topics.

I get how the Genesis does not stand compared to SNES, both because of the hardware and 1st party support, but I will always treasure being introduced to Gunstar Heroes. In my eyes, it trumps Contra. The gameplay was superb & smooth as silk. Which is a LOT to say, for games of that time.

I haven’t finished the episode but imagine that it is safe to assume that the PSTV is not on the list. Just wanted to give a quick shout out to it. The best way to revisit Vita and PS1 Classics, in a legal way, on your TV. I also appreciated its super small form factor. Considering the competition, I’d put it 1 level above trash, but still respect it for what it was.

Colin wanting PS3 in the S tier and not N64 is funny. PS3 is no better than low A tier.

I nodded my head with most everything voiced about the WiiU. I still own one today, because of my stacked Virtual Console library and the fact that (imo) Mario Maker is better on the WiiU (a rare case where the simultaneous use of TV and tablet added to the gameplay experience, thinking of create mode specifically).

The PS3 being higher than the Xbox 360 is laughable. You guys seriously are not giving that console credit. That was the console to buy that generation and that was one of the best console generations of all time. You don't have the fps/br landscape without the 360. You don't have online gaming for consoles being nearly as important.

The PS3 rocks, I still have it hooked up to my TV. Having said that ain't no shot it's S tier. Sooooo many games run so poorly on it, and the store has always been a nightmare to run. I'll always love my ps3 tho. Good pod boys.

As someone who started gaming as a kid in the PS2 era I love hearing you guys talk about all of the older consoles and games I've never experienced.

The DS is a monster of a handheld, with such variety in genres on display. Shout out to Contact, a game that wen’t under many’s radar. At a time when ‘wall breaking’ wasn’t as common, it was both funny and touching with its use of it. ❤️

I wonder if the majority of the FF fanbase feel that 16 is a FF game or not. For me, I think it's a great game, but it lacks that feel that the great ones like 6, 7, and 4 have.

Only time backwards compatibility counts is with the DS?! If you count backwards compatibility then PS2 and PS3 need to be at least as high as PS1
