Three Old Men Talking About Video Games | Constellation, Episode 88

Welcome to "a very special episode" of Constellation, Last Stand Media's conversational podcast. This week, I (Colin) am joined by a duo of guests as opposed to our traditional trio: Punching Up's Gene Park and storied game designer David Jaffe. In an unusual (though not unprecedented) move, I asked the guys not to come prepared with any topics this week. Instead, I thought we'd just chat about whatever and see where that brought us. Perhaps not surprisingly, a lack of a concrete plan led us into nearly three hours of video game talk about a wide variety of topics: Concord, Astro Bot, Drawn to Death, Jim Ryan, Mark Cerny, Naughty Dog, The Last of Us Online, Killzone, Resistance, Uncharted, God of War, PlayStation games going to Xbox, Phil Spencer, Bobby Kotick, Nintendo, Super Switch, and on and on. We hope you enjoy. Get early access to Constellation and all Last Stand Media shows at: https://www.patreon.com/LastStandMedia

Man episodes like this I miss Dagen!

Alan Wake 2 - Alan WOKE

It’s kinda funny, because I feel similarly from the opposite direction, but it just doesn’t seem worth it to me to get wound up about politics. Anyway, description is entirely games stuff. Could be good!

Jaffe's story about getting sexually harassed and liking it made me laugh out loud 🤣. I disagree with him often but I love him for the random tangents.

Brent

Jaffe is 100% right regarding the disappearance of beloved characters. They killed off Joel, they retired Nathan Drake, they’re trying to replace Kratos w/ Atreus, Miles Morales w/ Peter Parker. I seriously doubt this is going to work out well for these franchises. Let people have the characters they love! Do you not like money???

Jon Barnett

I think this format is better than the usual, honestly

It's been really weird watching the LSM community grow more and more fanatically left-wing over time as new people who are not as familiar with Colin's lore enter the fold. I do wonder if the sheer number of lopsided lib hosts/guests without any real pushback at all (Colin doesn't count, he barely pushes back) will eventually create a cascading effect where the right-wing patrons slowly just start saying "nah, I'm done" and LSM becomes the exact same left-wing echo chamber every other online community devolves into. The political Constellations are not worth watching. If I wanted uninformed political commentary by dumb people without any balance at all I could just turn on most major news networks in America. It's eye-rolling having political episodes in an election year where there is not a single person invited who actually supports one of the two major candidates and can articulate those positions. Plenty of these people exist, but we all know they are never going to be invited on for obvious reasons.

These are all characters who live in time though. None of them are like a Mario or Sonic or Spyro or Crash who can just sort of exist. You’d have to reboot them time and time again or stunt their character growth, and their development as characters are what made them beloved to begin with.

Kirill

Maybe I am in the minority, but I really prefer Constellation to be about anything other than games. All other LSM shows are about gaming and it really makes me miss knockback that much more!

NUTSO JIMBO

I really enjoyed this, please provide more. Make sure to include Cog for the second episode of 'Old Men Talking About Video Games'

Brent

That’s a good point. And I know they cant go on forever but I believe there’s more stories to tell. Definitely in the case of Joel, he was cut short of what could’ve went on for another 2-3 games.

Directional Joy

Treating a game as a novel, instead of a binge, is what I found necessary to enjoy LoZ: Breath of the Wild & Tears of the Kingdom. When I forced an attempt at quick progress, my time with the game felt miserable.

This is a really sick episode. You guys gotta do more like this. Just free flowing conversation, but ABOUT gaming… really good

The reason games don’t work for streaming as well as movies and music is. In the case with movies. We can watch them in 2 hrs and it’s over. So we don’t miss them when they go off the service. And with music. Music never goes off the service. If games can be streaming in a way that they NEVER leave the service. Then maybe they could work. But if they are only on there temporarily, like movies, they won’t work. Because they can take 100 hrs to complete. And they get taken off the service before you can beat them. I’ve had this happen to me and it sucks. Just happened with lost judgement on PSPlus. I still have the PS streaming service. But it would never replace buying and owning my game..

colin, jaffe, and gene need to do a no topic show once a month. (on stelly, SS+, or totally new show)

Guybrush Threepwood

I like how the AI-aged pics of colin and gene look strikingly older than each of those gentlemen yet the Jaffe one just looks the same :)

Gooch Gobbler

My god, you were in Charlotte Douglas airport Colin? Please don't let that be your impression of NC. Worst airport I have ever been in. A complete mess with wires hanging form the ceiling

George Edkins

Just a little thing I have noticed related to something Colin keeps saying, the "X people have preordered this game" isn't actually accurate. In my experience it only shows people who have interacted with the game on the PSN in some way, so this is really only people who played the beta- which makes WAY more sense.
